Citizen Sleeper 2: Game Development at Its Most Accessible

Star Citizen 2 and its No-Code Roots

Gareth Damian Martin, the solo developer behind Citizen Sleeper 2: Starward Vector, has made a name for himself in the gaming world with his unique approach to game development. While most developers are familiar with coding, Martin has taken a different route, relying on visual scripting tools to create his games. In this article, we’ll explore Martin’s journey and the tools he used to create Citizen Sleeper 2.

Martin’s background is in illustration and writing, and he credits his skills in these areas for his ability to create the game’s visuals. “I knew that I could write, and I knew that I could do graphic design, so I was like, ‘Well, what kind of ideas can I do within that space?'” Martin says. “And so a UI game, like In Other Waters, seemed like a really obvious decision.”

Martin’s experience with In Other Waters led him to discover PlayMaker, a visual scripting tool for Unity. “That immediately opened up game development for me,” Martin says. “I do work with a programmer on porting and things, but I think it’s hard to make a video game without ever having anybody write a piece of code. But also, thanks to the Unity Asset Store combined with visual scripting and things like this, game development is definitely more accessible than it’s ever been.”

Martin’s economical 3D backgrounds, created in Blender, contrast sharply with Singelin’s detailed 2D character art. “The lighting, for example, in the background is quite similar to the way that Guillaume’s lighting is,” Martin says. “Guillaume has a lot of soft gradients in his lighting style. So I think we managed to make them rhyme in the end, so that they hold together.”

Martin’s approach to game development is all about playing to his strengths. “You’ve got to think very cleanly about what it is that you really are good at, and try to build a project around that, rather than try to build any kind of ideal project,” he counsels. “Try to build something as light as possible and as efficient as possible, and with realistic, achievable aims.”

Citizen Sleeper 2: Starward Vector is set to release on January 31 for Steam, GOG, PS5, Xbox, and Nintendo Switch. With its unique blend of visual scripting and artistic flair, it’s a game that’s sure to captivate gamers and developers alike. Martin’s approach to game development is a testament to the power of playing to one’s strengths, and a reminder that success can be achieved through creative problem-solving and determination.
