Te Whatu Ora sees end of GP2GP
Te Whatu Ora Health New Zealand has revealed actions to address the immediate risks of the “outdated” GP2GP electronic patient record transfer system.
The system, which was introduced in 2011, is expected to be “replaced or rendered unnecessary” once the upcoming shared digital health record system goes live by midyear.
Until then, to address pressing issues, Te Whatu Ora says an updated GP2GP source code will be provided to practice management software suppliers; secure messaging provider HealthLink will support the transfer of files up to 50 megabytes; and a consistent version of the system will be released.
Western Australia expands virtual ED
Access to the WA Virtual Emergency Department (WAVED) is being expanded to more citizens, almost two years after the service was launched.
The WA government has partnered with Healthdirect, the nationally funded health advice service, to expand the virtual service. Based on a media release, Healthdirect will connect eligible adults with WAVED referrals to a senior emergency doctor via telehealth.
The virtual ED initially served seniors and those living in residential aged care homes. Since 2023, WAVED has assessed 72% of emergency referrals, helping reduce ED presentations.

Access to the virtual platform providing the 12-week Magistrates Early Referral into Treatment (MERIT) is being initially implemented for people attending Broken Hill, Wilcannia and Wentworth local courts.
The virtual care option is being introduced to meet the unique needs of remote and rural communities, according to the NSW government.
“The addition of virtual drug and alcohol treatment options will make it easier for those in regional and remote areas to access [MERIT’s] support,” said acting attorney-general Ron Hoenig.
