Microsoft Adds Native Spanish Voices to AI Voice Assistant Copilot Voice
Breaking Barriers in AI Adoption
AI voice assistants like Copilot Voice make it easier to get help with everyday tasks by resembling a conversation with a human. However, these experiences are often limited to English speakers. Microsoft is changing that soon.
Introducing Native Spanish Voices
On Tuesday, Microsoft announced it is adding two native Spanish voices to Copilot Voice, allowing Spanish speakers to have free-flowing conversations with AI. Copilot Voice’s perks include being able to interrupt it mid-conversation, having multi-turn dialogue, and being receptive to the emotions expressed in your voice. The result is a more seamless dialogue that allows for better assistance.
Survey Highlights Latino Households’ Value in AI Assistants
This announcement was paired with a new Microsoft survey that Latino households find real value in AI assistants. Out of the 504 US Latina moms ages 25-40 surveyed, 60% reported using AI for everyday tasks. The survey found that the most common use cases included entertainment (57%), personal growth (56%), work-related tasks (51%), and language translation (46%).
Emotional Support and Practical Tasks
As a native-Spanish speaker, I can attest that an extremely helpful functionality of AI chatbots is being able to translate text accurately. Typically, a downfall of text translators like Google Translate is that it will translate the text literally and, therefore, incorrectly. Because AI models understand meaning and user intent, they can do a much better job at accurate translations.
Beyond practical tasks, the Latina moms surveyed also found that AI can also help them with emotional support. Out of the respondents already using AI, 38% used it for parental guidance. The respondents said that the top reasons for using AI for advice over people included the convenience of 24/7 availability (67%), AI being a nonjudgmental source of support (48%), stress management, and the ability to ask sensitive questions without judgment (34%).
Conclusion
Microsoft’s addition of native Spanish voices to Copilot Voice is a significant step towards making AI more accessible to Spanish speakers. The survey highlights the value that Latino households place on AI assistants, and the emotional support and practical tasks they provide. As AI continues to evolve, it’s exciting to see how it will continue to enhance our lives.
