Anyone who has swum in the murky pool that is online dating knows it can sometimes be a grim place. It is wise, therefore, to carry out a spot of due diligence before turning up somewhere to meet a stranger from the internet, who may or may not be a jerk, energy vampire or indeed a fictional character created by a disgruntled former flame. I, alas, have personal experience of all three.

A New Level of Due Diligence

A recent date took this idea and really ran with it. Not only had he googled me before our first encounter, but he had also asked ChatGPT’s new “deep research” tool to, well, deep research me, and come up with a psychological profile. An eight-page psychological profile.

The Machine’s Verdict

“Kelly comes across as intellectually curious, independent-minded, and courageous in her convictions . . . which suggests a high degree of self-confidence and integrity,” said The Machine. “Her humorous anecdotes about her own gaffes betray a lack of ego and an ability to laugh at herself . . Psychologically, one might describe Kelly as a sceptic with a conscience.”

My Thoughts on the Analysis

All nice enough. But I’m not sure it quite captures how I might feel and behave in a dating context. Does The Machine believe that there is no more to me than the opinions I have expressed publicly? It displayed no degree of uncertainty or doubt about its analysis. Also, is it implying that most sceptics have no conscience? Psychologically, one might describe The Machine as an intellectually challenged entity with excessive self-confidence.

Ethics of AI-Powered Dating

Is it ethical to be using generative artificial intelligence in this way? Just because information is out there, does that mean accessing an AI-processed, aggregated, speculatively psychoanalysed distillation of it is fair game? I thought I would turn to — who else? — The Machine for an answer.

The Machine’s Response

“While using AI to gain insights about someone might seem tempting, psychological profiling without their knowledge can be invasive and unfair,” The Machine replied. “People are complex, and AI can’t replace real human interaction, observation, and intuition.”

A Question of Consent

I then asked Gemini AI model if it was okay to use its deep research tool to profile someone without their explicit consent. It responded, “You should not use ChatGPT to profile someone without their explicit consent, as it can be a violation of privacy and potentially harmful.”

Conclusion

My experience has taught me that generative AI is creating a very unequal online world. Only those of us who have generated a lot of content can be deeply researched and analysed in this way. I think we need to start pushing back.

What We’re Looking For

Value: All manufacturers offer configurations that cost a small fortune, but the best laptops are usually worthwhile even at their base level. Our goal is to find those sweet spots.

Performance:

How much performance you really need may be subjective, but the more headroom you have, the more a laptop can adapt to your evolving needs and the longer it can last before things feel sluggish.

Keyboard and Trackpad:

The keyboard and trackpad are the main interfaces you use with any laptop, and they should be good, even in a desktop replacement you mostly use with an external mouse and keyboard. What makes a good keyboard and trackpad? It’s slightly subjective, but a quality keyboard should have a logical and efficient layout, enough key travel to make typing feel good and lower the risk of double-presses, and ideally be backlit for easier use in the dark. Any worthwhile laptop should have a good trackpad that easily delivers accurate clicks and swipes, with gestures for better multitasking. Trackpads often come in two styles: hinged at the top (like a piano key) or haptic (where it doesn’t actually move, and the haptic vibration you feel emulates a physical click).

Screen:

In a perfect world, every laptop would have a large and bright OLED screen capable of displaying true blacks, with a resolution of 2560 x 1600 or higher and a refresh rate of 120Hz (or greater). But a panel like that comes with heavy costs, both in money and often in battery life. Not every laptop can have that ideal setup, but any good one should be sharp with accurate colors, enough brightness for some outdoor use (typically that means 400 nits or greater), and free of annoying anomalies like ghosting or bad off-angle viewing. Aside from OLED, Mini LEDs also make a great laptop panel that can be a big step up from the more typical IPS display, and an even bigger step up from the dim TN panels on truly cheap laptops. Unless a touchscreen is essential to a laptop’s design (like one that converts into a tablet), they’re usually a nice bonus, rather than a requirement. Ideally, they’d work with a stylus for more flexibility. MacOS laptops never have touchscreens, but they’re fairly common on Windows machines, Chromebooks…

Asus Chromebook Plus CX34

The Asus Chromebook Plus CX34 is the least expensive laptop with Google’s new Plus certification. At around $400 for a Core i3 processor, 8GB of RAM, and 128GB of storage, it’s the baseline Chromebook you should consider if you can’t spend any more.

It’s so easy to get a bad Chromebook at this price, so it’s a relief that the Chromebook Plus CX34 is so good. Not only does it have respectable internals, but the 1080p screen and 1080p webcam are good for the price, the keyboard is great, and the trackpad is fine, if a bit stiff. Battery life is decent, too, and like all Plus Chromebooks, it comes with 10 years of software updates. You can spend more on a laptop, and you probably should, but don’t buy a Chromebook less powerful than this one.

How We Test Laptops

Just like everything The Verge reviews, our laptop testing is primarily based on real-world use. We do run synthetic benchmarks like Geekbench, Cinebench, and 3DMark to get quantifiable comparisons between CPUs and GPUs. But, ultimately, the number-crunching is only part of it. The rest comes from actually using a laptop in our day-to-day routine, which can involve everything from Chrome tabs and Google Docs to photo and video editing and graphically-intense games — both on battery and plugged in.

This challenge is leading to tension with employees who are eager to use AI to make their work faster and easier.

A new report released this week by generative AI company Writer looks at the disconnect between what companies are able to do with AI and what employees want them to do. The report, titled "Generative AI Adoption in the Enterprise," is based on a survey commissioned by Writer. Conducted by Workplace Intelligence, the survey elicited responses about AI in the workplace from 1,600 knowledge workers in the US, including 800 C-suite executives and 800 employees.

Many professionals are seeking jobs that would let them work with generative AI. Among those surveyed, 59% of C-suite executives and 35% of employees said they’re actively looking for a new job with a company more innovative with generative AI than their current employer. Expanding on that, 59% of the executives and 45% of the employees said they wouldn’t even consider working for a company that isn’t using generative AI.

Data analysis and insights was the most popular answer. Customer support, knowledge management, automating complex tasks, and automating repetitive tasks were next in line. Other reasons included content generation, personalized communication, editing and proofreading, brainstorming, and forecasting and decision-making.

This brings us back to the companies struggling to integrate AI. What challenges and obstacles have companies faced?

Many of those surveyed said that the adoption of AI has led to power struggles within their company. Specifically, the move has created tension between IT and other lines of business, as well as between executives and employees. Some say that IT leaders aren’t working with employees to adopt AI, that IT isn’t delivering real value with generative AI, or that employees have been left to figure out how to use generative AI on their own.

How Organizations Can Move Forward with AI

With companies struggling to adopt generative AI, some employees eager to use it, and others afraid of it, how can an organization move forward in this area? The report offers a few tips.

  • Create and invest in a formal generative AI plan. Based on the survey, companies that invest in a formal plan have been much more successful at integrating AI than those without a plan. Make sure you invest enough in the tools and technology to generate the ROI you want.
