Marketers Embracing Generative AI

0

AI Adoption In Marketing

A survey by Gartner of 418 marketing leaders found that 73% of marketing teams use generative AI.

However, 27% of CMOs say their organizations have limited or no use of GenAI in their marketing campaigns.

Correlation With Top Performers

Marketing teams that consistently exceed targets and meet customer acquisition goals are adopting AI faster than competitors.

Greg Carlucci, Senior Director Analyst in the Gartner Marketing Practice, states:

“The most successful marketing organizations are leading the way when it comes to GenAI adoption.”

Most marketers are using GenAI for:

  • Creative development (77%)
  • Strategy work (48%)
  • Campaign evaluation (47% reporting benefits)

Challenges With Generative AI

Despite spending almost half their budgets on campaigns, 87% of CMOs faced performance problems last year, and nearly half had to end underperforming campaigns early.

The Gartner study found:

“On average, 87% of CMOs report they experienced campaign performance issues in the last 12 months, with 45% reporting that they sometimes, often, or always had occasion to terminate campaigns early in the last year due to poor performance.”

CMOs identified several departments as barriers to their success:

  • Finance (31%)
  • Executive leadership (26%)
  • Sales (26%)

Opportunities With Generative AI

Adobe’s research highlights personalization as the primary AI opportunity for marketers.

Heather Freeland, Chief Brand Officer at Adobe, notes:

“Across all industries, there is an insatiable demand for content as customers expect every encounter with a brand to be personalized.”

She adds:

“Just when this challenge seemed insurmountable, the emergence of generative AI is presenting creative and marketing teams with a new way to keep pace with customer demands while also breaking through with their brands.”

The study finds that 97% of marketers believe mass personalization is achievable with AI, but most find it challenging without appropriate tools.

AI Acceptance Among Consumers

Consumers say that knowing content was created by AI either makes them more engaged or does not change their engagement at all.

Adobe’s study found:

Three in four consumers surveyed agree that knowing content was AI-produced would either improve or not impact their likelihood of engaging with it.

Consumers are even willing to share their data for a better AI-driven experience.

Adobe’s study finds the top data points consumers are willing to share include:

“… past purchases (56%), products they’ve viewed (52%), their gender (47%), age (41%), and language (35%).”

Generational Differences

Different age groups prefer personalization in different channels.

According to Adobe’s research:

“Gen Z respondents show a higher affinity for personalized content from the consumer electronics industry, particularly music (45%) and video games (43%)…

This contrasts with Baby Boomers, who prefer personalization in retail industry content, specifically from grocery stores (46%).”

The study also found:

“Millennials prefer personalized email campaigns (45%) and website content (40%), while Gen Z values social media personalization (51%).”

Measurable Results

Adobe reports that the implementation of GenAI tools delivered performance improvements.

Its report states:

“… in one of our first generative AI-powered email tests, we used the tool to quickly build and test five versions of an Adobe Photoshop email. It delivered a more than 10% increase in click-through rates, and a subsequent test reported a 57% increase in click rates for an Adobe Illustrator email.”

Additionally:

“Testing scale and speed transformed our approach to content optimization, significantly enhancing our marketing performance and efficiency.”

Conclusion

Generative AI is shifting from a novel technology to a standard practice within marketing.

Marketing departments are facing tighter budgets while consumer demand for personalized content grows. Generative AI offers a potential solution to create personalized content at scale.

Further, using AI to personalize marketing messages will unlikely impact consumer perception of your brand. Some marketers believe it may even improve retention.

Anthropic’s Claude AI Launches New Model Capable of Extended Thinking

The New Model Doesn’t Come Free

Anthropic’s Claude AI has launched a new model, known as Claude 3.7 Sonnet, which is capable of extended thinking and deeper responses. The new model uses advanced reasoning and greater processor time to evaluate a question in a step-by-step process and produce a detailed result.

Accessing the Extended Thinking Mode

The extended thinking mode is accessible through the Claude website and the API for developers. However, it doesn’t come free. Users must have a Pro or Team subscription to tap into the extended thinking option.

The Benefits of Extended Thinking

The extended mode is particularly adept at tackling difficult math and coding problems, as well as front-end web development. In this mode, Claude "self-reflects" before providing an answer, taking the time to develop its response and better handle tasks that involve math, physics, instruction-following, and coding. Along the way, Claude shows users the steps it took to arrive at its solution.

Early Testing and Evaluation

In its announcement, Anthropic touted the performance of Claude 3.7 Sonnet in early testing and use. One site found the new model significantly improved at handling complex codebases and using advanced tools. Another successfully used Claude to build sophisticated web apps and dashboards from scratch. In a third evaluation, Claude created production-ready code with quality designs and dramatically fewer errors.

Comparison with OpenAI’s o1

Testing of agentic tools put Claude 3.7 Sonnet ahead of the 3.5/3.6 version of Sonnet and OpenAI’s o1 model. Testing in software engineering placed Claude 3.7 Sonnet at the top among the previous version, OpenAI’s o1, and DeepSeek R1.

How to Try Claude 3.7 Sonnet and Claude Code

To try Claude’s new extended mode, users must be a Pro or Team subscriber. Head to the website, click the drop-down menu for the models, and select Claude 3.7 Sonnet. Change the thinking mode from Normal to Extended, enter and submit your request.

Claude 3.7 Sonnet in Action

In response to a request, Claude displayed each line of HTML and CSS code as it was being generated. When Claude finished its work, users can view the page in HTML mode or in preview mode.

Claude Code for Developers

Claude 3.7 Sonnet also offers an innovation for developers. With this new version, Anthropic has introduced a command-line tool for agentic coding, known as Claude Code. This allows developers to assign intricate engineering tasks to Claude directly from the terminal. Available for now as a limited research preview, Claude Code can search for and read code, edit files, write and run tests, and commit and push code to GitHub.

Conclusion

Anthropic’s Claude AI has launched a new model capable of extended thinking and deeper responses. The new model uses advanced reasoning and greater processor time to evaluate a question in a step-by-step process and produce a detailed result. While it doesn’t come free, users with a Pro or Team subscription can access the extended thinking option.

The Duolingo Owl Rises From the Grave

Duo’s Dramatic Resurrection: A Marketing Masterstroke or Desperate Ploy?

A Shocking Turn of Events

Language learning app Duolingo recently revealed some sad news – its iconic owl mascot, Duo, was dead. Well, surprise! After a dramatic fake death, the beloved bird is back, returning to berate avid linguists in a dramatic resurrection for the ages.

A Masterclass in Emotional Manipulation

Duolingo is known for its impactful branding thanks to its legendary mascot. When the bird’s untimely demise was announced, it seemed like a sacrilegious marketing move – in fact, it was quite the opposite. With fans flocking to pay their respects by completing their language lessons (it’s what Duo would’ve wanted, of course), the brand drummed up some serious engagement through the guise of collective mourning. Little did fans know the bird would soon be back with a bang.

Dueling Reactions

Announcing Duo’s grand return in a playful Instagram post, fans were divided by the resurrection, with some overjoyed while others felt understandably deceived. "The emotional manipulation was real," one user wrote, while another scathingly chimed in, "If you needed attention that badly you could have just said so". Duo’s resurrection even struck fear in some fans, with one writing, "He’s gonna smite me upon his return."

A Question of Authenticity

While I’d typically be against cheap shock tactic campaigning, Duolingo’s over-the-top, offbeat branding has built a strong identity hinged on virality and personality, earning it a pass from me. In essence, it was only a matter of time before the brand killed off (and subsequently revived) its iconic mascot, but the question remains – how do you top a fake death?

A Balancing Act

So far, Duolingo has skirted on the border of stale brands using ‘relatable’ marketing tactics to appear less corporate. Seemingly using its ultimate trump card, it’ll be interesting to see what Duolingo has in store next and whether it can avoid the trap of cringey desperate branding.

Conclusion

Duolingo’s resurrection of its beloved mascot, Duo, is a testament to the power of emotional manipulation in marketing. While some may view it as cheap or desperate, the brand’s offbeat personality and viral branding have earned it a pass. The question remains, however, whether this move will pay off in the long run or become a cringeworthy attempt to stay relevant.

FAQs

Q: Was Duolingo’s use of fake death a marketing success?
A: Yes, the brand drummed up serious engagement through the guise of collective mourning and emotional manipulation.

Q: How did fans react to Duo’s resurrection?
A: Fans were divided, with some rejoicing and others feeling deceived or manipulated.

Q: Is Duolingo’s use of emotional manipulation a sustainable marketing strategy?
A: It’s unclear, but the brand’s offbeat personality and viral branding have earned it a pass so far.

I Was an AI Skeptic Until These 5 Tools Changed My Mind

0

My AI Tools for Research and Productivity

It’s taken me a while to come around, but I’ve become a fan of certain AI tools – when used for specific purposes. I’ve even found some of those tools to be very helpful throughout my day (so much so that I haven’t used Google’s search engine in weeks).

That, my friends, is refreshing.

How I Got Here

I started out 100% against AI but then I realized I was against AI when used as a shortcut for things like writing and other artistic endeavors. Once I realized AI was very good at helping me research different areas (where I’d previously used a search engine), I adopted it into my process.

My Favorite AI Tools

1. Ollama/Msty

This is the combination I use the most. Ollama is a command-line AI tool that allows me to use specific LLMs locally, so I can trust my queries don’t wind up on a third-party server, waiting to be used for whatever purpose. The LLM I use the most with that combination is Llama 3.2 because it’s fast and to the point. The answers I get from Llama 3.2 trim all the fat, so I get only the answers I need.

2. DeepSeek R1/Msty

Remember when I said that Llama 3.2 got right to the point with its answers? Every so often, I need more from my research assistant; I need it to dig deeper and present even more rabbit holes for me to dive into. I might be writing a book about time travel and need to get a foundational understanding of how it could work. With the right information, that could lead me down other avenues where I could come up with something even better for a plot. That’s when I turn to DeepSeek R1. When I need something quick and easy, if I were to use DeepSeek R1, I’d wind up frustrated.

3. Perplexity

Perplexity has become my default search engine in Zen Browser. Why did I do this? First off, I dislike and distrust Google’s search engine. There’s no way of knowing if my data is being used against me for building a profile, and Google’s algorithm never seems to get it right for me. Besides, when I use a search engine for research purposes, I inevitably wind up on a site that is either so overrun by ads that it brings my browser to a crawl, has incorrect or out-of-date information, or it’s painfully obvious that Google would rather serve me sites that pay the company rather than give me the answers I need.

4. Aria

Although I switched to Zen Browser as my default, I still use Opera for certain purposes. For instance, when I’m working on something and I know I’ll need to keep going back to AI for research, I might open that work in Opera and use Aria as needed. The reason for this is that Aria is easily accessible from the Opera sidebar. I can click the Aria icon, and a panel opens, where I can run my query. When I’m done, the panel slides out of the way, and I’m back to work. The Opera/Aria integration is the best AI/browser combo on the market.

5. Gemini

Although I’ve installed Perplexity on my Android phone, it cannot be used as the default digital assistant – that’s Gemini’s job. When I’m on the go, if I need to do some quick research, I’ll ask Gemini my query or use it to set alarms, add appointments to my calendar, send messages, etc. If you’re an Android user, it’s hard to avoid using Gemini. I have also used Gemini Live, as it makes for a great way to work through problems. Usually, I’ll turn to my wife or my best friend, but when I need absolutely unbiased information, Gemini Live is a great place to start.

Conclusion

In conclusion, I’ve found that AI can be a valuable tool for research and productivity, as long as it’s used for specific purposes. By using the right AI tools, such as Ollama, DeepSeek R1, Perplexity, Aria, and Gemini, I’ve been able to streamline my workflow and get the answers I need quickly and efficiently.

FAQs

Q: What is Ollama?

A: Ollama is a command-line AI tool that allows you to use specific LLMs locally, so you can trust your queries don’t wind up on a third-party server.

Q: Why do you use Perplexity as your default search engine?

A: I dislike and distrust Google’s search engine, and Perplexity provides more accurate and unbiased results.

Q: What is Aria?

A: Aria is an AI tool that allows you to run queries from the Opera sidebar, making it easily accessible for research.

Q: Can I use Perplexity on my Android phone?

A: No, Perplexity is not available for Android phones, but you can use Gemini, a default digital assistant, for quick research and tasks.
