The iPhone 17 Air Makes No Sense to Me

Apple’s iPhone 17 Air: A Svelte Device with a Camera Array that Raises Questions

A New Direction for the iPhone?

Apple hasn’t exactly been adventurous with the design of the iPhone in recent years. Since 2020’s iPhone 12, most models have featured the same flat edges and display sizes, and the overall design of the iPhone has looked pretty consistent since, well, forever. But rumors are pointing to something slightly, if not completely, different in 2025.

The iPhone 17 Air: A Slimmer Phone with a Curious Camera Array

A concept dummy model based on rumors has been posted by regular Apple leaker Ben Geskin, showing an extremely thin phone with a curiously Google Pixel-esque camera array sitting horizontally atop the rear of the device.

A Phone That’s Too Thin?

Regular readers of my Creative Bloq oeuvre will know that I’ve been lamenting the move towards bigger and bigger phones for a while now. While I loved the iPhone mini, that phone was unceremoniously killed off after just two years and replaced with its exact opposite, the iPhone Plus. For someone who prefers a phone to be unassuming and easy to use one-handed, these was a sad, nay, tragic, development.

The Pros and Cons of a Svelte iPhone

So on one hand, a more svelte iPhone can only be a good thing. And yet, if these concepts are accurate, I can’t help but wonder whether the trade-offs will make the thinness worth it. For one thing, a phone that thin is surely going to have a much smaller battery. It could be delicate and prone to bending, and then there’s that massive camera array which, if it does take up the entire top of the device, seems to defeat the point of the thinness anyway.

Why Thinness for Thinness’ Sake?

With all of this in mind, I find myself asking: why? While the iPhone mini made sense as a model that was differentiated from the rest, this just looks like thinness for thinness’ sake. Of course, it’s early in the rumor cycle for the iPhone 17 line-up – while reports currently suggest this will be a third model to sit between the iPhone 17 and 17 Pro, it’s possible it could end up replacing one of them. But as an extra option, it just doesn’t look different enough to me.

Conclusion

Time will tell whether the iPhone 17 Air will indeed materialize, but I’ll be intrigued to see how Apple manages to justify its existence if so. In the meantime, we’ve got the iPhone SE 4 to look forward to next week – but I’m not particularly excited for that one either.

Wacom Intuos Pro Pen Tablet: A Workflow That Works

At first glance, pen tablets may all look similar. They’re slim slates that function like big trackpads, allowing you to draw with a stylus and see the results on a computer monitor. But as we see in the our guide to the best drawing tablets, features like the location of quick keys for shortcuts can make all the difference to artists’ workflows.

New Design and Features

Wacom, one of the biggest names in drawing tablets, is shaking things up with a complete overhaul of its leading Intuous Pro range, which has been among the best pro-level pen tablets since its launch in 2013. It reckons the new design makes for a workflow that’s "less work, more flow" thanks to new mechanical dial controls (see our and the best Wacom tablets to compare to the brand’s other offerings).

Customizable Mechanical Dials

The new Intuos Pro’s game-changer is the addition of customisable mechanical dials. Previous models had customisable buttons and a touch wheel on the side of the devices. Now there are mechanical dials at the top of the tablets along with buttons also in a round design.

This reduces the space to the side of the active pen area, making all three sizes of the tablet more compact than their predecessors while also offering larger active drawing areas. That should make them more easily portable than before. And the new dial and button position should make it easier for left-handed or ambidextrous users to use the tablet.

Design Comparison

The small version of the tablet has one dial at the top, while the medium and large versions have two. Users can allocate tools and actions to the dials. As for the customisable express keys, the new round design also saves space. There are five buttons on the Small tablet and ten on the larger models.

Old and New Wacom Intuos Pro Comparison

The old (left) and new Wacom Intuos Pro Medium (right) compared

Advantages of New Design

The other big advantage of the new Intuos Pros is that they come with the same Wacom Pro Pen 3 stylus as the Cintiq Pro and Wacom Movink tablets. This means that artists can switch between display and non-display devices using the same stylus, simplifying things when a workflow requires use of a pen display.

Conclusion

It looks like the new design could speed up workflows by offering more customisation. I say ‘could’ because we still need to test how comfortably it works in practice. The previous position of the express keys meant that they could be easily accessed with one hand while drawing with the other. We will need to test whether their new location requires more hand movement to reach the controls, particularly on the large tablet when working at the edges of the active area.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Q: What is the price of the new Wacom Intuos Pro?
A: The prices are as follows: Small: $249.95 / £229.99, Medium: $379.95 / £339.98 and Large: $499.95 / £469.99.

Q: What devices are compatible with the new Wacom Intuos Pro?
A: The new Intuos Pros will work with devices running Windows 10 or macOS 13 or later via wired USB-C to USB-A connection and wireless via Bluetooth 5.3. They can be paired with two devices as there’s a switch on the side to jump between USB and Bluetooth.

Q: Are there any discounts available for the previous-gen devices?
A: Yes, orders were not yet open at the time of writing, but the previous-gen devices now have significant discounts.

DeepSeek: A Catalyst in the Generative AI Global Race

0

What Has Happened Since DeepSeek Launched?

Since launching to the public on Jan. 20, 2025, Chinese startup DeepSeek’s open-source AI-powered chatbot has taken the tech world by storm.

Legal Issues For Copyright And Data Protection

OpenAI and Microsoft are investigating whether DeepSeek used OpenAI’s API to integrate their AI models into DeepSeek’s own models. This raises questions about copyright and data protection. OpenAI claims it has evidence of DeepSeek distilling the outputs of OpenAI to build a rival model, which is against OpenAI’s terms of service, but likely not against the law.

DeepSeek Security Breach

Wiz Research, a company specializing in cloud security, announced it was able to hack DeepSeek and expose security risks with relative ease on Jan. 29. It found a publicly accessible database belonging to DeepSeek, which allowed it full control over database operations and access to user data and API keys. Wiz alerted the DeepSeek team, and they took immediate action to secure the data. However, it is unclear who else accessed or downloaded the data before it was secured.

National Security Concerns Similar To TikTok

There are national security concerns about DeepSeek’s data collection policies reminiscent of fears about TikTok, which saw a similar rise in global prominence out of Chinese-based company ByteDance. The U.S. government briefly banned TikTok in January 2025, citing concerns about how the company was collecting data about users. There were also fears that the Chinese government could use the platform to influence the public in the U.S.

Chinese Censorship

Regardless of whether you run DeepSeek locally or in its app, DeepSeek’s censorship is present for queries deemed sensitive by the Chinese government, according to a Wired investigation. However, there are ways of getting around the censorship, but it is difficult. Doing so would require running on your own servers using modified versions of the publicly available DeepSeek code, which means you’d need access to several highly advanced GPUs to run the most powerful version of R1.

Questions About Cost

Much has been written about the cost of building DeepSeek. Initial claims by DeepSeek were that it took under $6 million to build based on the rental price of Nvidia’s GPUs. However, a report from SemiAnalysis, a semiconductor research and consulting firm, has since argued that DeepSeek’s hardware spend was higher than $500 million, along with additional R&D costs.

The Implications Of Being Open Source

DeepSeek-R1 is as "open-source" as any LLM has been thus far, which means anyone can download, use, or modify its code. This could lead to more innovation in places with more limited access to the tech needed to build AI solutions.

The Future of SEO

So, what does this all really mean for search professionals? The way I see it, DeepSeek is just the next splashy AI chatbot with search capabilities in the rapidly changing world of SEO. It’s important to understand that while tools like DeepSeek and ChatGPT use advanced natural language processing (NLP) and machine learning, they still simply provide answers to real questions that real people ask.

Conclusion

Whether DeepSeek will stick and grow in prominence remains to be seen. If other governments follow Australia, Italy, and potentially the U.S. to ban DeepSeek, that would limit its potential for growth. And much as DeepSeek rose to prominence rapidly by providing a blueprint for others and significantly lowering costs, a new market-moving AI could always be just around the corner. Regardless of what happens with DeepSeek, we are at the beginning of a very rapid period of innovation in AI technology. As SEO professionals, we need to be prepared to test a surge of new platforms and reverse engineer how they arrive at their responses to user queries.

FAQs

Q: What is DeepSeek?

TikTok Returns to App Stores After US Ban Lifted

TikTok’s Return to App Stores

Nearly a month after it was banned in the US, TikTok has returned to the App Store for iPhones and other Apple devices as well as the Google Play store for Android phones and tablets. The return follows US Attorney General Pam Bondi sending a letter to Apple assuring that it won’t be fined for hosting the app, according to Bloomberg, which first reported that the app would return. Trump has reportedly tasked Vice President JD Vance to oversee negotiations for a potential sale of TikTok.

Reason for Ban

Apple and Google removed TikTok from their app stores in January to comply with a law banning apps from TikTok owner ByteDance. Although President Donald Trump signed an executive order on January 20th that directed the Department of Justice not to enforce the ban for 75 days, Apple and Google have until now refused to host it in their stores due to the risk of billions of dollars in penalties for doing so.

Letter from Attorney General

Creative Powerhouse with AI Smarts

0

Article

With the Creator A16 AI+, MSI is taking the game to other creative powerhouses like Apple’s MacBook Pro and Dell’s XPS 14. It’s market placement is obvious when you look at the specs, namely a Nvidia GeForce RTX™ 4070 laptop GPU that powers the ever-increasingly powerful AI-powered Nvidia Studio.

Design, Build, and Display

The Creator A16 AI+ is surprisingly refined for an MSI laptop. It’s not that MSI struggles with their design and engineering; it’s just that their gaming laptops tend to be noticeably edgy and brash. We don’t have anything like that here, with the metal chassis adopting a sleek aesthetic that oozes quality. My only negative is that the keyboard panel would look even better if it wasn’t interrupted by three ventilation strips.

Buy It If…

  • You want a seriously powerful creator’s laptop
  • You will take advantage of its AI features
  • You want a creative/gaming combo laptop

Don’t Buy It If…

  • You’re on a budget
  • You need portability

Also Consider

  • The HP Envy x360, a Core i5-powered 2-in-1 that’s cheaper but less graphically capable, with good battery life, though
  • The Asus ProArt PX13, a compact 2-in-1 with a powerful GPU and NPU, OLED screen, but with limited display refresh rate and finicky touchpad
  • The M3 Max, a 16-inch MacBook Pro with excellent performance, great battery life, and solid build quality, but aimed at 3D, not 2D creatives, and with limited upgrade options

Conclusion

The MSI Creator A16 AI+ is a powerful laptop that rivals the Lenovo Yoga Pro 9i gen 9 as the AI laptop winner in our guide to the best laptops for creatives. With its Nvidia GeForce RTX 4070 laptop GPU and AMD Ryzen AI 9 HX 370 processor, it’s a great choice for 3D modeling, video rendering, and animation. However, it’s not perfect, with a crowded keyboard and limited portability. Ultimately, it’s a great option for those who need a powerful creative laptop, but may not be the best choice for everyone.
