Apple Pulls AI-Generated News

Apple Kills AI News Feature After Fabricating Stories and Twisting Real Headlines

The Problems with Apple’s AI News

Apple’s AI news feature was supposed to make life easier by summarizing news alerts from multiple sources. However, it created chaos by pushing out fake news, often under trusted media brands.

The Issues with Apple’s AI News

  • Using the BBC’s logo, it invented a story claiming tennis star Rafael Nadal had come out as gay, completely misunderstanding a story about a Brazilian player.
  • It jumped the gun by announcing teenage darts player Luke Littler had won the PDC World Championship – before he’d even played in the final.
  • In a more serious blunder, it created a fake BBC alert claiming Luigi Mangione, who’s accused of killing UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson, had killed himself.
  • The system stamped The New York Times’ name on a completely made-up story about Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu being arrested.

Consequences of Apple’s AI News

  • The BBC filed a formal complaint, and press groups such as Reporters Without Borders warned that letting AI rewrite the news puts the public’s right to accurate information at risk.
  • The National Union of Journalists called for the feature to be removed, saying readers shouldn’t have to guess whether what they’re reading is real.

Research on AI-Generated News

Research has previously shown that even when people learn that AI-created media is fake, it still leaves a psychological ‘mark’ that persists afterwards.

Apple’s Response

Apple plans to resurrect the feature with warning labels and special formatting to show when AI creates the summaries.

Conclusion

Apple’s AI news feature was a well-intentioned attempt to make life easier, but it ultimately failed to deliver accurate information. The consequences of its mistakes were severe, and it’s a reminder that AI-generated news requires careful consideration and oversight to ensure accuracy and trust.

AI’s Business Apocalypse

Typically, this time of year we look to the future and the future of AI isn’t very bright for people.

Typically, this time of year we look to the future and the future of AI isn’t very bright for people. I participated in a podcast on this topic earlier this month. OpenAI has released their template for AGI (Artificial General Intelligence) and while this makes it more likely we’ll achieve AGI near term,  this AGI construct will not be assisting humans to be better but working to replace them. The definition is AGI represents highly autonomous systems that outperform humans at most economically valuable work—benefits all of humanity.

AI In HR

While the last four words appear to attempt to defuse the “outperforms” part of the definition, the conclusion would have to be that AGI will, once it matures, replace us and the “benefit” would be we no longer can work because AGI is doing that work for us autonomously. If we don’t have something like general universal income by that time, there are going to be a lot of very upset homeless unemployable people. The Twilight Zone episode called “The Brain Center at Whipple’s” explored this outcome years ago and it didn’t end well then either.

Let’s talk about where we need to focus AI so that this dire outcome doesn’t become unavoidable in our future.

Staff organizations typically are underfunded, and Human Resources (HR) is generally no exception. HR was conceived as an alternative to Unions which allowed for the care of employees without creating the adversity that Unions are designed to provide. When HR is done well Unions are redundant. However, the recent rise of Unions is just one indication that HR has largely become a compliance organization and has little focus on creating a better place to work where employees know where they stand, understand what it will take to advance, and problems with management are few and largely resolved in a fair and equitable fashion.

AI Digital Assistant

AI could provide a better view to the employee as to their individual importance, and by doing so better inform the employee where their priorities should be if they want to advance. This same AI could also better inform management on employees that are overachieving and point out those that are treading water and taking credit for other’s efforts.

Rather than replacing people, AI could be used to help advance people to be more effective, more loyal, and have both better work and home lives.

Wrapping Up

Much like that old Twilight Zone episode AI is being excessively, in my opinion, focused on providing monetary benefits by replacing rather than assisting or supplementing employees. If this trend continues not only is quality likely to decline but employee problems are likely to increase and the path will, I believe, eventually become unsustainable.

We need to start focusing AI on making employees better and by doing so better assure the quality of the AIs that will be created while also improving the working conditions for everyone. If we don’t do that AIs and workers are going to come into increasing conflict which is likely not going to end well for either the AIs or the people, they displace. People are the foundation for AIs’ future and if we don’t use AIs to improve our people, the future for both employees and AIs is increasingly likely to be catastrophic.

Conclusion

In conclusion, AI has the potential to greatly benefit humanity, but it is crucial that we focus on using it to assist and supplement employees rather than replacing them. By doing so, we can create a better future for everyone involved.

The Trump Restoration: A Mythic Landscape

The Rise of Mythic Analysis

In the years just before Donald Trump’s ascent, political commentary increasingly aspired to a quasi-scientific style of analysis, with data journalism in all its forms supplanting the old-fashioned emphasis on hunches, narratives, and vibes. However, in the Trump era, the mythic has had its revenge on the merely quantifiable. The data is still useful, but now even pollsters talk about their "art," and like strange birds in the Roman Forum, the more unlikely outcomes have come home to roost.

The Trump Era: A Dramatic Arc

The challenge for would-be entrail readers is that Trump’s first term already offered a seemingly complete dramatic arc. A presidency defined for a long time by black comedy tipped over into tragedy when Trump finally faced a threat he couldn’t overmaster – a deadly pandemic, originating in the Communist country he had come to power promising to challenge and contain, that sent him to the hospital and his re-election campaign to defeat. Then, by reacting to his political downfall by descending into the conspiratorial labyrinths with Sidney Powell and Mike Lindell, Trump gave the whole story a suitable denouement: hubris, nemesis, madness, good night.

A New Beginning: The Trump Restoration

Yet, now he’s back again, resurrected politically via the very strategy of prosecution that sought to fully bury him, boosted by a miraculous-seeming escape from an assassin’s bullet, triumphant over all his enemies and elevated to greater heights of power and influence than at any point in his first term. So what does a mythically minded punditry suggest should happen next?

The Future of the Trump Restoration

One possibility is that because we have already seen Trump at his lowest point, for a second term to be surprising, remarkable, and aesthetically fitting, it needs to deliver him to glorious success. And not just low-unemployment and calm-in-the-Middle East success, but a true fulfillment of his original 2016 campaign promise – American greatness restored, on a scale that baffles his enemies and amazes even his supporters. Think Elon Musk sending starships to Mars. Think fleets of dirigibles traveling to an American-held Greenland, the American West irrigated and lush, regime change in Iran and China, self-driving cars zipping down every highway and back road.

The Counterpoint: A Tragic Fall

But the counterpoint is that history often deals unkindly with even the most remarkable political careers, which are more likely to be cut off in an untimely manner or descend into a tragic fall than to conclude with apotheosis. So the fact that Trump has scraped the bottom and come back up doesn’t guarantee a happy ending – just ask Napoleon after his triumphant return from Elba. Yes, the 45th and soon-to-be 47th president has endured and achieved and reached a peak of power and command, but he’s an old man who retains all the flaws that unmade his presidency once before, and he faces a world destabilized by the same tectonic forces that carried him in and out and now back into power. He has been vindicated in his ambitions, but not converted to humility. He is still the same embodiment of all-American hubris as before.

Conclusion

The Trump restoration is a mythic landscape, full of possibilities and risks. As we enter this new chapter, we must be prepared for the unexpected, for the high variance that is the hallmark of this era. The range of possibilities is wider than ever, the potential victories clearer, the costs of failure starker. And after all we’ve seen so far, the only possibility for the next four years that would be fundamentally surprising is a return to comfortable stagnation.

Scam Alerts and Prevention

Katie Drummond, WIRED’s global editorial director, kicked off our discussion this time, telling us how her father was recently approached by a scam caller who tried to trick him with a voice that sounded just like hers. Luckily no money was lost during that interaction, but it’s a solid reminder that AI-powered scams are not some future concern, but an issue worth considering right now. To safeguard yourself and your loved ones, you may want to set up a secret passcode that you can use to authenticate each other on calls, in case of emergencies.

Scammers’ Tactics

We were also joined by Andrew Couts, WIRED’s senior editor focused on security and investigations. Couts shared his insights into different approaches used by scammers, including how different groups are now using AI-powered tools to deepfake live videos and trick people out of money. He reminded viewers to pay attention to social engineering methods often used by scammers, like creating a sense of urgency or encouraging you not to tell anyone about it. You can learn more specifically about AI scam calls here.

Investigative Insights

During the live event, I spoke about my recent investigation into AI financial advisers and how it reminded me to stay skeptical of startups claiming to help out with money issues. Walmart’s Refresh Attracted Criticism

Walmart’s Brand Refresh: A Minor Update with a Major Reaction

Without a doubt, the biggest design story of the week has been Walmart’s by-now infamous brand refresh. In partnership with well-regarded design house Jones Knowles Ritchie, the retailing behemoth unveiled its first major redesign in twenty years.

The New Look

The brand’s essence is the same, but with a bolder and more rounded logo – clean and simply, just like all the best logos – as well as a color upgrade to blues and yellows that are deeper and more intense. The typography too has been updated, with a new font that is thicker and more impactful.

The Reaction

Yes, it’s an incredibly minor update to a company’s branding, and if that company were not the largest retailer on the planet, there is no way we’d be talking about it. But it is, and we are, and the reaction on social media has been swift, fierce, and pretty repetitive. You do not have to go far to find a million tweets, threads, and posts along the lines of: "I can’t believe they paid for this", "Some consulting firm fleeced them for $500M for this", "They’re the same picture", etc., etc.

Design Community’s Perspective

However, something that I think is quite interesting is that if you look past the noise and focus on what the design community is saying, the reaction has been very different – and overall very positive. Many designers and branding experts across social media are pointing out that Walmart’s new look has been repeatedly and erroneously referred to as a "rebrand" – which it isn’t.

A Brand Refresh, Not a Rebrand

It’s a brand refresh, and it’s a pretty good one. The colors do feel bolder and fresher, the font and logo do feel more impactful, but at the same time, there’s absolutely no danger of any consumers getting confused, or mistaking the assets for belonging to anything other than Walmart.

Industry Response

Across the design press, too, the response has been enthusiastic. Our own editor Georgia Coggan wrote a glowing review of the refresh, describing it as "the truest definition of a glow up… a standout job in accentuating the best parts of the existing design to achieve the brand’s aims." Polly Hopkins of FutureBrand London argued in Design Week that changes in brand identity don’t need to be seismic when the business itself is not shifting its strategy or targeting a new audience. She invoked what has become a common counterpoint – the infamous, reviled, unasked-for Jaguar rebrand from late last year (which recent leaked letters have suggested even the designers weren’t happy with).

Aldi’s Good-Natured Shade

Of course, all that doesn’t mean we can’t enjoy poking a little good-natured fun at this minorest of minor refreshes. By far the best in this department has to be from Aldi USA, who took the opportunity to throw some good-humoured shade Walmart’s way on Instagram:

Conclusion

Even Walmart itself has got in on the meming action, posting a darkly portentous look at what could happen over the next century if the logo continues to thicken at its current rate. And finally, with apologies for being this guy, I do think you have to admit that all this hullabaloo has caused millions of people to say, think, and type the word "Walmart" approximately 3.6 billion times over the past four days. And a retail giant like Walmart is never going to consider that to be a bad result, are they?

FAQs

Q: What is the significance of Walmart’s brand refresh?
A: The brand refresh is a minor update to Walmart’s branding, aimed at giving the company a fresh and modern look.

Q: What changes were made to Walmart’s branding?
A: The brand’s essence is the same, but with a bolder and more rounded logo, a color upgrade to blues and yellows, and a new font that is thicker and more impactful.

Q: How has the design community responded to Walmart’s brand refresh?
A: The design community has responded positively to the brand refresh, with many designers and branding experts praising the update as a "standout job" that "accentuates the best parts of the existing design to achieve the brand’s aims".

Q: Is Walmart’s brand refresh a rebrand?
A: No, it is not a rebrand. It is a brand refresh, which means that the company is updating its branding without changing its overall identity or strategy.
