Narrative Landscapes: Designing Storytelling in Digital Art

Building a Narrative Using Interiors: A Tutorial

01. Create your scene in 3D

I always start by building a rough 3D scene to establish the camera angle and composition. There’s no need to model specific props here, just arrange boxes as placeholders. I set up a second viewport to see through my camera, which allows me to check the positions of the elements within the frame and avoid any tangents. Remember to set the camera’s focal length, as this will determine the perspective distortion.

02. Work big to small

Once you’re done with the model, take a screenshot and start sketching in the big volumes on top, balancing big, medium, and small shapes for visual interest. I use a lot of overlaps because they add a sense of depth. Also, think about what your character would own. Would their desk look sleek and modern, or worn and vintage? Imagining the items they’d keep nearby helps build the story and adds personality to the environment.

03. Add story and personality

Small details can breathe more life into the illustration. For example, tangled cables, a messy drawer, or scattered art supplies can all add to the narrative. As you work, think about what you want to communicate about your character and how their environment reflects their personality.

04. Unify the colours

Finally, set a gradient map on Soft Light blend mode to help unify the color scheme. At this stage, you can paint finishing touches like wispy hairs and strands on the carpet where it catches the light to enhance its fluffy texture.

05. Group your values

I simplify and flatten the areas where I don’t want to draw too much attention, such as the shelf and the corner beside the desk, with a masked Brightness/Contrast adjustment layer. Darkening the background behind my character creates contrast, which helps them stand out and directs the viewer’s attention.

06. Conclusion

By following these steps, you can create a rich and immersive environment that tells a story and reveals the character’s personality. Remember to balance big, medium, and small shapes, and don’t be afraid to add small details that bring the scene to life.

Why I Ignore 99% of AI Tools

How to Avoid AI Overwhelm and Focus on What Matters

By the time you finish this sentence, at least two new AI thingies have been announced. Big tech will have made some ridiculous promise that either makes you question your livelihood or makes you go, "Cool story, bro." Not gonna lie; this is exhausting. Trying to keep up makes my head hurt, and keeping up is literally my job.

How to Avoid AI Overwhelm

Instead of getting bogged down in the latest tools and trends, focus on the problems you want to solve. Ask yourself:

  • What challenges are you facing at work or in your personal life that AI could help solve?
  • What outcomes do you want to achieve?
  • Write down tasks you do repeatedly that feel slow or tedious, like research, writing, or summarizing information.

Next, test two or three AI tools specifically built for those tasks. Use each tool for at least one day to see if it makes your workflow faster or easier. Keep only the ones that save you time or simplify your day. Ignore the rest, no matter how popular they seem.

The AI Tools I Use

For my specific workflow, here are the AI tools I use:

  • ChatGPT – My beloved! I’m using ChatGPT kinda like a creative assistant, to help me generate ideas. I don’t use it for the heavy lifting like creating content… I may be a creative snob, but I don’t think AI writing is that good… I’m willing to admit I could be biased and refuse to be replaced by a machine.
  • Perplexity – For the most part, Perplexity has replaced Google in my research workflow.
  • Grammarly – To check grammar and spelling when emailing or creating content. It’s kinda my editor, if I’m being honest. (And it hates when I use words like kinda.)
  • Canva – If I need to design a presentation for a client or a meeting… Canva is quick and easy to use. I haven’t found an AI tool that makes a presentation as good as Canva, but I’m watching this space, will keep you posted.

That’s it for my daily workflow. But like I said, you need to pick what works for you and not blindly follow anyone (including me).

How I Manage AI FOMO

Trust me, the struggle is real. With that said, here’s how I handle AI FOMO.

I’m working on accepting that knowing everything is impossible. I’ve replaced passive learning with immediate action. I’m at the age where I don’t learn anything "just ’cause." I need to be able to use that information immediately. Quality over quantity. I have a few trusted sources I rely on for AI news.

Conclusion

Feeling like you’re missing out isn’t unique to any one topic. We all deal with it, whether that’s constantly checking email or social media to ensure we’re not missing anything important.

Test two or three AI tools specifically built for those tasks. Use each tool for at least one day to see if it makes your workflow faster or easier. Keep only the ones that save you time or simplify your day. Ignore the rest, no matter how popular they seem.

FAQs

Q: What are the most popular AI tools, and what that even means?
A: The most popular AI tools are often the ones that get the most attention, but that doesn’t necessarily mean they’re the best for your specific needs.

Q: How do you stay up-to-date with AI news?
A: I rely on trusted sources like ZDNET for my AI news, not just because I work here, but because I trust their commitment to fair and unbiased reporting.

Q: What’s the point of all these AI tools if you’re spending more time learning how to use them than actually using them?
A: I’m not against innovation or AI, but I believe that what’s the point of all these tools if you’re not using them to simplify or speed up your workflow?

The Consequences of the Boom-and-Bust Cycle in Venture Capital

A Veteran VC’s Perspective on the Current State of the Industry

In a recent episode of the StrictlyVC Download podcast, Aileen Lee, a veteran venture capitalist, discussed the consequences of the recent boom-and-bust cycle in the venture capital industry. According to Lee, one of the major consequences is that many companies are left stranded, struggling to regain their footing after raising too much money at unsustainable valuations.

Limited Partners’ Fears and Frustrations

Lee highlighted that limited partners (LPs) hesitate to criticize powerful fund managers, fearing they will be shut out from investing in those firms again. However, if they could speak freely, they might say that many of the people who were hired at these venture firms during the ZIRP era made a bunch of bad investments. As a result, these companies are being elbowed out, and the LPs’ money is being wasted.

The Impact on Startups and Investors

Lee emphasized that it’s not the fault of the newer investors, who were given checkbooks and made investments without proper training or mentorship. This has led to many orphaned companies, which are now struggling to find outside help with exit strategies.

The Role of Senior General Partners

Moreover, Lee noted that companies are often orphaned by senior general partners who led the investment but stopped attending board meetings. This lack of oversight has led to a lack of due diligence and a culture of corner-cutting, resulting in companies struggling to find outside help with exit strategies.

The Need for Checks and Balances

As Jason Lemkin, another longtime VC, pointed out, there should be checks and balances in place to ensure that fund managers are held accountable for their investments. Without proper diligence and oversight, fund managers may abrogate their fiduciary responsibilities to their LPs, leading to frustration and disappointment.

Conclusion

The recent boom-and-bust cycle in venture capital has left many companies struggling to regain their footing, and the consequences are far-reaching. With many LPs unhappy with the returns, it’s clear that something needs to change. The industry needs to prioritize transparency, accountability, and proper governance to avoid similar situations in the future.

Appy Pie Limitations

0

How We Test

Our expert reviewers spend hours testing and comparing products and services so you can choose the best for you. Find out more about how we test.

Appy Pie Review

Appy Pie has been around for a decade but has thus far not managed to dislodge the likes of Wix and Squarespace from the top spots of our best website builders guide. The Indian-based company provides a range of services including tools to create apps, chatbots, and automation tools. I wonder if Appy Pie has spread itself too thin with their website builder suffering for it.

Features

Appy Pie lacks the depth of features that you might see in other more comprehensive website builders. What you do get is a basic builder that allows novice users to create websites. Some of the key features are as follows:

  • Responsive layouts: Websites created with Appy Pie adjust to whatever device or platform they are being viewed on. I appreciate this is a non-negotiable for web design nowadays, but with other features lacking, I knew it would be helpful to be explicit about it. I love the ability to quickly switch between a desktop and a phone display even when editing.
  • Drag-and-drop tools: Appy Pie’s drag-and-drop functionality makes it fairly straightforward to add and rearrange elements. It lacks the ability to place elements based on a grid but there’s enough flexibility to design most types of common websites.
  • Ecommerce tools: Appy Pie makes it relatively easy to add ecommerce tools including connections to third-party stores such as Shopify, Etsy, and Magento. List products, take payments, and track sales with Appy Pie’s built-in tools.
  • Blog integration: Continuing the theme of integration, with Appy Pie, it is possible to connect to a range of blogging tools including Blogger and WordPress. Simply add the specific one and enter the blog URL. Appy Pie takes it from there.
  • Security: Every Appy website offers HTTPS and DDoS protection to keep users from cyber threats and breaches.

Performance

Appy Pie is rather lacking when it comes to performance and feels like it needs a rewrite from the ground up. General page edits can be carried out without too much fuss but anything more complicated begins to drag. With users now expecting their tools to work seamlessly and without delay, Appy Pie is going to struggle to attract and keep users unless it addresses these issues.

Templates

Website builders are well known for their extensive set of templates. Both Wix and Squarespace have hundreds of different options and it’s easy to switch between them during the design phase or even once the website is live.

Unfortunately, Appy Pie is seriously lacking in this area, with the only functionality for changing the look of the website being to adjust individual settings related to fonts and colours. I was gobsmacked at how limited Appy Pie is in this area. If you’re happy adjusting each element then you’ll be fine but if you’re looking for any sort of template functionality then you won’t find it here.

AI Tools

Despite being labelled as one of the best AI-powered website builders, I didn’t actually witness many AI features. One example that’s worth noting is the AI Text Creator tool that is built into the text blocks. It’s as simple as telling the AI tool what you want to say and letting it generate ‘better’ alternatives. I think users would be much better writing their own unique copy that has their style built into it but the option’s there if you want it.

Interface

The Appy Pie interface is a story of two halves. Let’s begin with the negative and end with the positive.

Let’s get straight to it. It’s painfully slow and clunky, especially when moving between different pages and implementing features. This is compounded by the lack of an intuitive interface that guides you through how to extend the functionality of your site.

Unfortunately, the lack of speed and responsiveness tainted my enjoyment of using what is actually, at its core, quite a simple-looking tool. Making edits to a page is as easy as clicking on an element and then making adjustments inside the context menu. Blocks can be moved up and down the page by either dragging them into a new location or using the up and down arrows. It was all good in this regard.

Who is it for?

Appy Pie is for any individual or small business who wants to create a website. It’s ideally suited towards creatives who have no coding experience and would benefit from a graphical user interface to help them with the design.

Buy it if…

  • You have no prior experience of website design
  • You want a simple interface

Don’t buy it if…

  • You need up-to-date stylish templates
  • You want a fast and problem-free workflow

US Treasury Staffer Accused of Violating Policy by Sending Sensitive Information to Trump Administration Officials

The Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) is facing yet another controversy as court documents reveal that a 25-year-old staffer, Marko Elez, sent a spreadsheet containing personal information to two unnamed officials at the US General Services Administration. According to reports, Elez, a former employee at Elon Musk’s X and SpaceX companies, was tasked with combing through the Treasury’s payments system.

Background

Elez resigned from his position at DOGE in early February after racist social media posts linked to him were discovered. Despite this, DOGE rehired him to work at the Social Security Administration. The staffer’s actions have raised concerns about the department’s onboarding process, with 19 state attorneys general suing the Treasury Department in February over DOGE’s access to the department’s systems.

Investigation Findings

A recent investigation by the Treasury Department found that Elez’s laptop and email account were analyzed, and it was determined that he did not make any alterations to the Bureau payment systems. However, the investigation did reveal that he emailed a spreadsheet containing personal information, including names, transaction types, and amounts, to two unnamed officials at the US General Services Administration.

Violations of Policy

The Treasury Department has accused Elez of violating policy by not encrypting the document and not obtaining proper approval to send it. Although the department claims that the document is low-risk, as it does not contain sensitive identifiers such as social security numbers or birth dates, the incident still raises concerns about the potential risks of data breaches.

Response from States

In a separate court document, the states suing the Treasury Department expressed their concerns about the investigation’s findings, stating that the results “do nothing to allay any of the concerns expressed by the court in its opinion about the rushed and chaotic nature of the Treasury DOGE Team onboarding process.”

Conclusion

The recent allegations against Marko Elez have raised serious concerns about the Department of Government Efficiency’s security protocols and onboarding process. The incident highlights the need for improved security measures to prevent data breaches and protect sensitive information. As the investigation continues, it remains to be seen how the Treasury Department will address these concerns and ensure the security of its systems.

Rebranding the Democrats: A Necessary Evolution

0

The New Democratic Party Logo: A Step in the Right Direction or a Misstep?

It seems the US Democratic Party has a new logo, or at least a new profile pic on social media. The design is instantly familiar, as a donkey icon has long been associated with the party, even if it’s never been the Democrats’ official logo. But is a new logo really a priority, especially as the party organises its opposition to Donald Trump’s presidency?

A New Look for a New Era?

The apparent new logo is being mocked by Republicans for looking like a piñata and by some Democrats for seemingly giving the party a ratings drop from four stars in previous designs to just three (just like the Republicans’ elephant). Some people are reading too much symbolism into the fact that the donkey is now facing to the right rather than left, while others are unhappy about the absence of the color red. Blue is considered the color of the Democrats, but some feel that losing the red is ceding the US flag to the Republicans. Others see the design as another example of the trend towards the "oversimplification of logos".

Why the Democrat Logo is a Donkey

Strangely, the traditional icons of the Democrats’ donkey and the Republicans’ elephant seem to have been heavily inspired by the same cartoonist. And the animal mascots weren’t exactly intended as compliments. The logo of the Democratic Party in some states is still a rooster, but the party’s association with donkeys goes way back to Andrew Jackson, the seventh US president, who was dubbed a "jackass" by his enemies. Apparently, the Democrats liked the term’s common-man implications. But it was Thomas Nast, a political cartoonist at Harper’s Weekly from 1862 to 1886, who seems to have popularized the donkey as a representation of the party.

A Two-Horse Race

A two-horse race. The official Republican Party logo and this previous Democratic Party donkey look almost comically similar.

Conclusion

A donkey might not seem the most fearsome animal to take on the Republican’s marauding elephant, but it is familiar, and it has more character than a letter ‘D’ in a circle, which is what the Democrats have been using as their official logo. And don’t forget: donkeys can deliver a powerful kick.

FAQs

Q: Why did the Democrats choose a donkey as their logo?
A: The association with donkeys goes back to Andrew Jackson, the seventh US president, who was dubbed a "jackass" by his enemies.

Q: Why is the donkey facing to the right?
A: It’s not clear if the party is trying to send a message or if it’s just a design choice.

Q: Is the new logo a step in the right direction for the Democratic Party?
A: Some people think so, while others are skeptical that it’s a priority.
