Nvidia’s Profits Soar as Demand for AI Chips Remains Strong

Nvidia’s profits and revenues soared last quarter as a rush among technology companies to build artificial intelligence infrastructure sustained demand for the advanced chips that have made it one of the AI boom’s biggest winners.

Record-Breaking Results

Sales increased 78 per cent year over year to $39.3bn, above estimates in a Bloomberg survey of $38.3bn. Net income surged to $22.1bn, up 80 per cent from a year earlier. The group expects to report revenue of about $43bn for the current quarter.

Chief Executive’s Reassurance

Nvidia chief executive Jensen Huang on Wednesday shrugged off concerns over the impact of Chinese AI start-up DeepSeek’s claims, saying there was "amazing" demand for the group’s latest-generation Blackwell chips. Data centre revenues nearly doubled in the quarter ending January 26 as Big Tech companies swiftly built out AI offerings. Blackwell delivered $11bn in revenue for the quarter.

Analysts’ Views

"DeepSeek threats or disruptions were not evident in Blackwell’s chip demand or data centre revenues," said Dec Mullarkey, managing director at SLC Management. "The earnings were not a blowout, but they didn’t show any glaring vulnerabilities either."

Gross Margins Slip

Gross margins, a measure of profitability that excludes operating expenses, were 73 per cent in the fourth quarter, compared with 76 per cent in the same period last year. The group’s chief financial officer, Colette Kress, attributed the decline to the transition to "more complex and higher cost" Blackwell systems.

Stock Performance

Nvidia’s shares were down 1.2 per cent shortly after Wall Street’s opening bell, but had been trading in positive territory during pre-market trading on Thursday before US President Donald Trump said he would impose an additional 10 per cent tariff on imports from China. The stock had risen almost 4 per cent on Wednesday before the release of its results.

Conclusion

Nvidia’s strong performance is a testament to the growing demand for AI infrastructure, and the company’s ability to capitalise on this trend. Despite some concerns over the impact of DeepSeek’s claims, the group’s results suggest that demand for its chips remains strong.

Netflix in Hot Water over Trademark Infringement

The Controversy

Netflix is facing a trademark infringement lawsuit from Pepperdine University over its new series, Running Point. The fictional basketball team in the show, "The Waves," has been accused of appropriating the university’s branding, including its signature colors and team mascot.

The Allegations

Pepperdine University claims that the show’s visuals are too similar to its own branding, which could lead to "misrepresentations" between the two identities. The university is seeking injunctive relief and damages for the alleged misappropriation of its brand.

Netflix’s Response

Netflix has responded to the allegations, defending the show’s design choices. In a statement, the company claimed that the name "The Waves" evokes the LA area where the fictional team plays, and that the blue and orange color palette is simply a result of color theory, with orange being the naturally contrasting color opposite blue.

The Debate

The controversy has sparked a heated debate about the importance of branding and the line between inspiration and infringement. While some argue that the similarities between the two are coincidental, others see the show’s design choices as a clear attempt to capitalize on the university’s brand.

The Wider Context

This is not the first time a design dispute has made headlines. Recently, Meghan Markle faced criticism for her new logo, which was accused of appropriating a Spanish town’s heritage coat of arms. Similarly, two universities have clashed over who gets to use the ‘D’ logo.

Conclusion

The controversy surrounding Running Point serves as a reminder of the importance of branding and the need for creators to be mindful of existing brands and intellectual property. As the debate continues to unfold, one thing is clear: the stakes are high, and the impact on both parties could be significant.

FAQs

Amazon’s New and Improved Virtual Assistant: Alexa+

Alexa’s Generative AI Era

Amazon says Alexa+ is "smarter than she’s ever been before," capable of picking up on your tone and delivering answers in a more empathetic voice. It even has more powerful visual capabilities.

New Features and Capabilities

During a live demo, Panos Panay, who heads up Amazon’s Devices and Services department, used an Echo Show to snap a photo of the live audience and asked whether folks looked energetic. The crowd applauded at the start of the interaction, and Alexa+ analyzed the picture and said everyone looked "pretty fired up," pointing out finer details like how people had laptops open, and that all eyes were on Panay.

More Personalized Experience

The other big new feature is Alexa+’s ability to learn new information you provide. You can feed the assistant documents, emails, study guides, and recipes, and it will memorize it all, allowing you to ask for relevant information later. For example, if you upload a document of the rules from your homeowner’s association, you can ask Alexa+ a question like, "Can I add solar panels to my house?" It will reference the rules. You can refer to any recipes you’ve used before—or handwritten recipes you’ve fed to the assistant—and ask specific questions about ingredients or measurements.

Contextual Understanding

The broad theme is that you can generally ask Alexa+ a question in a natural way and it should be able to help in some way. Where before you may have asked Alexa to "show me my doorbell feed," now you can ask Alexa+, "When was the last time someone took the dog out for a walk?" You’ll need a Ring subscription, but Alexa+ can understand the context of what it sees through your security cameras. These features match many of the capabilities Google has been promising as it injects its Gemini large language models into Google Assistant.

Easier Interactions

Alexa+ is also supposed to be a lot easier to interact with daily. You can create routines using your voice rather than manually setting things up through the app. It’s easier to shift music throughout your house too. You can move it from speaker to speaker by simply saying, "Play the music downstairs," or "Play the music everywhere, but don’t wake the baby," and Alexa+ will know to play it in every room except the nursery.

Conclusion

Alexa+ marks a significant step forward for Amazon’s virtual assistant, offering a more conversational and personalized experience. With its new features and capabilities, users can expect a more intuitive and helpful interaction with their devices.

FAQs

Q: When will Alexa+ be available?
A: The rollout starts next month on select Echo Show devices, with plans to eventually be available on every Alexa-powered device Amazon has shipped.

Q: How much will Alexa+ cost?
A: It will cost $20 per month, but will be free for Amazon Prime customers.

Q: What are the benefits of Alexa+?
A: Alexa+ offers a more conversational and personalized experience, with improved visual capabilities, contextual understanding, and easier interactions.

I Ditched My Roomba for This New Roborock Vacuum

0

ZDNET’s Key Takeaways

  • The Roborock Saros 10R is available for $1,600
  • This new robot vacuum and mop combination navigates complex areas and quietly vacuums, with a good mopping feature that reaches along the edges to not miss a spot
  • The Saros 10R’s mirrored dock looks great, but the water tank is relatively small, lasting only a few cleanings, and the rotating mop pads aren’t as effective as roller mops, which are becoming more commonplace

Introduction

I’ve tested many robot vacuums and began my journey into the market over six years ago with an entry-level Roborock vacuum and mop. While that simple robot vacuum was a far cry from the flagship models available today, getting a robot to sweep and mop my floor was a game-changer for me and the company behind the device, Roborock. Fast forward to today and the Roborock Saros 10R is another game-changer for the company.

Setting Up the Robot

Setting up the Roborock Saros 10R is easy enough. The robot quickly paired with the Roborock app and the dock is heavy but easy to maneuver. The initial mapping run took only 11 minutes to map 742 square feet; the same area took my Roomba Combo 10 Max 84 minutes to map.

Performance

The robot gracefully and quietly vacuums, even with its 22,000Pa of suction power set to the highest setting, and maneuvers around furniture and obstacles easily. I’ve run the device daily, and it’s only gotten its brush roller caught three times: once with a one-inch tall penguin toy and twice with a kids’ rubber bracelet. Otherwise, the robot is good at avoiding socks, wipes, and small toys too big to get suctioned into its dustbin.

Mopping Feature

The Roborock Saros 10R has an extendable mop pad that cleans along edges. Out of all the robots I’ve tested, the Saros 10R is the one that has best avoided charging cables on the floor. I set up this robot upstairs, where I’ve rarely been able to keep a robot vacuum running on a schedule because of how many messes my kids leave in their rooms and mine.

Conclusion

The Roborock Saros 10R is perfect for homes with complex layouts or fast-changing environments. Whether you have kids who constantly leave toys around, a housemate who leaves charging cables everywhere they sit, or a spouse who takes off their socks wherever they are, the Saros 10R can handle these challenges on the fly and adjust its path accordingly.

FAQs

Q: How much does the Roborock Saros 10R cost?
A: The Roborock Saros 10R is available for $1,600.

Q: How well does the robot vacuum and mop combination perform?
A: The robot quietly vacuums and navigates complex areas, with a good mopping feature that reaches along the edges to not miss a spot.

Q: What are the limitations of the water tank and mop pads?
A: The water tank is relatively small, lasting only a few cleanings, and the rotating mop pads aren’t as effective as roller mops, which are becoming more commonplace.

Monster Hunter: Wilds is ‘easy’ – but why is that a bad thing?

Monster Hunter: Why is this new entry a bad thing?

Accessible but Less Challenging

I’ve been playing Monster Hunter: Wilds before its release, for the last week, and it feels like the most accessible entry in the series to date. You can read our review for the full lowdown on Capcom’s newest entry in this series, but the key takeaway is this: it’s easy. Or rather, it’s approachable. And I like it more because the design has been massaged into something everyone can enjoy.

A Larger World to Explore

Wilds has the largest world to date in a Monster Hunter game, and it’s a vast, seamlessly knitted space to wander and explore, with a solid story holding things together. But it’s the ease with which the world opens up that I love, and likely a reason some die-hard fans may find this entry less challenging.

Simplified Gameplay

Past Monster Hunter games were slow affairs, where you’d spend time tinkering with loadouts, crafting rare items, and generally mulling over your choices before venturing into the world to hunt massive creatures. Now, that pensive nature is flattened, it’s been hammered out like the best tachi blade. While the same gameplay remains, how you embrace it feels easier, quicker even.

Riding the Siekret

Traversing Wilds’ world is a simple matter of hopping on your Siekret and holding a button to follow a scent – it’s an autopilot for hunters, and many may feel it removes the impetus to memorize the world and truly immerse yourself in the Monster Hunter experience.

Less Time Spent Planning, More Time Hunting

Riding a Siekret is kind of a cheat code, as you can do almost anything – gather resources from the saddle and tackle monsters at pace. You can cook in the wilds, and, in fact, rarely need to return to the main camp unless you need something crafted.

Conclusion

So, while longtime fans may find Wilds less challenging, I love the ease with which I can jump in and play for an hour and feel like I’ve accomplished something. I’ve enjoyed the narrative and story beats far more than previous games. I’ve wallowed in the rain-dappled forests and dust of the game’s desert, and the impact of using the RE Engine is clear in every biome.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Is Monster Hunter: Wilds a good game for new players?
A: Yes, Wilds is designed to be more accessible and easier to grasp for new players.

Q: Will longtime fans still enjoy Wilds?
A: While Wilds may lack the challenge of previous games, the ease of play and new features may attract new fans to the series.

Q: Is Monster Hunter: Wilds available on multiple platforms?
A: Yes, Wilds is available on PC, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch.

iPhone 17 Leaks Reveal Major Design Changes

New Design for the Upcoming iPhone 17 Models

It’s that time of year again, when the rumor mill starts ramping up for the next iPhone launch, and the leaks and renders start to gain some credibility. And while the iPhone hasn’t changed a whole lot in terms of design over the past few years, but that’s all set to change in September 2025.

Rumored Models and Features

Rumour has it we’re in for three distinct models next year; the iPhone 17, iPhone 17 Air, and iPhone 17 Pro/Pro Max. And now leaked CAD files have offered us a pretty compelling glimpse at all three. With new, fat camera arrays and, in the case of the Air, a super-thin profile, there certainly seem to be some changes in store.

Leaked CAD Files Reveal Design Changes

Leaker Majin Bu has shared 3D renders of all three models. While the standard iPhone 17 looks pretty similar to the iPhone 16, the brand new ‘Air’ and the Pro models look very different. The iPhone 17 Air is rumoured to feature a single camera with a horizontal camera bump that takes up the entire width of the iPhone. Meanwhile, the iPhone 17 Pro is also rumoured to feature a full horizontal camera bump but with three lenses. In other words, the camera bump looks absolutely massive. And the 17 Pro is also rumoured to feature a glass section on the rear of the device for reverse charging (useful for charging, say, your AirPods).

Mixed Reactions to the Design Changes

We’ve already argued both the Air and the Pro seem a little nonsensical – in the case of the former it seems like we could see several sacrifices (battery life, single camera) in pursuit of thinness, whereas that massive Pro camera bump is just… too big. But we want to know what you think – let us know in the comments below.

Conclusion

The iPhone 17 leaks are just starting to roll in, and it’s clear that Apple is shaking things up with its design. While the standard iPhone 17 looks familiar, the Air and Pro models are taking bold new directions. Whether these changes will pay off or not remains to be seen, but one thing is certain – we’re in for an exciting September 2025.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What are the three iPhone models rumored to be released in 2025?
A: The iPhone 17, iPhone 17 Air, and iPhone 17 Pro/Pro Max.

Q: What are the main design changes in the iPhone 17 Air and 17 Pro?
A: The iPhone 17 Air features a super-thin profile and a horizontal camera bump that takes up the entire width of the iPhone, while the iPhone 17 Pro features a full horizontal camera bump with three lenses and a glass section for reverse charging.

Q: Are the design changes in the iPhone 17 Air and 17 Pro a good idea?
A: The article argues that the changes may come at the cost of battery life and camera quality, but we want to know what you think – let us know in the comments below.
