I’m standing outside a nondescript corporate office park in Las Vegas next to a box-shaped vehicle with no proper front or back. It’s got a set of sliding doors, no steering wheel, and touchpad controls. It’s bidirectional, meaning it can move in either direction without turning around. And to be completely frank, it looks more like an oversized toaster than an actual car.

This is the second-generation Zoox robotaxi, a purpose-built autonomous shuttle that has been testing in and around Las Vegas for the last year and a half. Zoox, a subsidiary of Amazon, has been working on it for over a decade, and during this year’s CES, it finally let a few journalists take a ride.

So far, the only robotaxis operating on public roads in the US are run by Alphabet’s Waymo. Others have tried but tend to run out of money or get sidelined by traffic mishaps (or, in the case of Cruise, both). Unlike Waymo, Zoox isn’t open to the public. It hasn’t even said when it will be. And as Waymo eyes new cities and new partnerships, Zoox is still stuck in beta mode.

But maybe it’s about to get unstuck. Inviting journalists to go for a ride is certainly a step toward a public launch.

The Ride

I take a seat in the robotaxi, which looks more like a pod than a car, and strap myself in. The route we take is a pre-determined 30-minute loop to the very edge of the Las Vegas Strip and back. It’s all local roads, no freeways, with speed limits around 45 mph. As we wind past restaurants and strip malls, we encounter construction zones, pedestrians, and other normalities.

The first challenge comes when we arrive at a construction site with a closed right lane ahead of an intersection. While the robotaxi navigates it fine, it still feels inorganic and slightly robotic. Instead of merging before coming to the lane closure like a human driver would, the Zoox drives right up to the sign blocking the lane, comes to a full stop, signals, and waits for a relatively large gap in the traffic to merge left. It takes a full minute before traffic lets up enough that the robotaxi feels confident enough to safely move over.

Later, we encounter a pedestrian waiting to cross with the light. No issues here: the Zoox waits patiently while the person crosses, and after the light changes, away we go.

The Verdict

Beyond those two real-world challenges, the ride is largely uneventful, with the exception of some random and rather sudden jerky braking at the last minute when it comes to a light or a stop sign. Overall, the experience feels safe but less fully realized than a Waymo ride. While the company says it’s made some upgrades to things like suspension, brakes, and the electric drive units, the ride is still a bit rough, and the braking occasionally feels abrupt. With the wheels at the outer corners of the vehicle, and the body so low to the ground, rough roads (like the construction zone) and potholes are felt acutely. And since the seats have minimal padding, those undulations travel directly through your seat and into your body. That could be a problem for folks more attuned to the high-riding comfort of most modern SUVs.

Zoox is taking the slow and steady route to autonomy, while keeping a handle on its own design and proprietary software. Making the leap from a few test vehicles to wider success in places that aren’t always sunny with clear skies and moderate temperatures year-round is still a long way off for any robotaxi company. The Walmart Refresh: A Delightful Addition to the Brand’s Identity

The recent refresh of US superstore Walmart’s branding got people talking. The word ‘refresh’ is operative here. This wasn’t a splashy new logo or big sweeping changes from agency JKR, it was more subtle logo tweaks and a new typeface. We called it the "definition of a glow up".

The Illustrations: A Personal Touch to the Brand Refresh

One area that I think has been overlooked are the new illustrations that have been created by Ross Murray, Nash Weerasekera, Peter Greenwood, Jason Solo, and Kelly Llanos. These add a personal touch to the brand refresh and really brighten up the stores when seen in-situ. In fact, I’d go as far to say that they’re my favourite part of the new look.

A Cohesive Identity

Although they are by five different artists, they definitely feel part of a cohesive identity, with Walmart’s blue and yellow tying everything in together. I really like the use of animation to bring them to life, too.

Bringing the Brand to Life

Some are more detailed, like the scene that shows two Walmart vans, shopping bags, and I presume website, yet still doesn’t feel like it’s shoving the Walmart brand down your throat. The line feels carefully placed, and I like the way the shadows are in light blue.

A Range of Products

Other animations focus on brand icons, which show off the breadth of what Walmart offers (no guns included!). There are flowers, a candle, hammer, some vitamins, makeup, and books. Again, these feel like a cohesive set despite the range of products.

The creative industries continue to evolve at pace, as advances in tech and the troublesome topic of AI impact the work that is being produced, how and by who (or what). With AI tools now more widely accessible and with more capabilities, many creatives are rethinking what they offer to clients, assessing the new skills they need to develop, mastering new software, considering emerging roles, and even going back to basics to offer a human touch in the face of all the new technology.

Predictions and Trends

Based on predictions in the World Economic Forum’s Future of Jobs report, graphic design will be the 11th fastest declining job in 2025-2030. The report, produced every two years, asks employers which jobs they predict will grow and decline the fastest over the next five years. The previous report said that graphic design was considered to be a moderately growing job, and researchers now link its new uncertain status largely to the rise of AI and other emerging tech.

Interestingly, UI and UX design is predicted to be the 8th fastest growing job. Given the continued increase in smartphone and tablet sales and the prioritization of digital products across all industries, the technical skills needed to create user-friendly interfaces are in high demand.

However, as Terrance Weinzierl, executive type director at Monotype, notes, the two roles – UX/UI design and graphic design – are not distinct disciplines. "How can you define graphic design? It is hard to pinpoint, and in my experience, it changes often," he says. "I think it’s interesting that graphic design is separated from UI and UX in this scenario. Why is there an imaginary line drawn between traditional graphic design and the digital applications for UI and UX design work? I see them in the same bubble."

Designers will need to remember to consider the client’s viewpoint throughout the design process, while potentially increasing transparency around the process and a focus on creators. "I have concerns about how AI is shaping perceptions of design," Laura says. "Clients often see the final product and as a result overlook the design process and strategic thinking that go into it. There’s also the risk that the distinction between human-made and AI-generated design is blurred, which could affect the perceived value of the work."

"I hope that, as AI is so accessible, it may open doors for creatives from underprivileged backgrounds to bring their ideas to life and enter the industry from less conventional routes," says Connor. "Without advancements in technology, I wouldn’t be a graphic designer today, so it would be pretty selfish of me to think that technology should stop advancing at the point where I’m comfortable."

US Sets AI Safety Aside in Favor of “AI Dominance”

What Biden’s Order Accomplished – and Didn’t

In October 2023, former president Joe Biden signed an executive order that included several measures for regulating AI. On his first day in office, President Trump overturned it, replacing it a few days later with his own order on AI in the US.

What Happened Next

This week, some government agencies that enforce AI regulation were told to halt their work, while the director of the US AI Safety Institute (AISI) stepped down.

Biden’s Order: What it Accomplished and Didn’t

In addition to naming several initiatives around protecting civil rights, jobs, and privacy as AI accelerates, Biden’s order focused on responsible development and compliance. However, as ZDNET’s Tiernan Ray wrote at the time, the order could have been more specific, leaving loopholes available in much of the guidance. Though it required companies to report on any safety testing efforts, it didn’t make red-teaming itself a requirement, or clarify any standards for testing. Ray pointed out that because AI as a discipline is very broad, regulating it needs – but is also hampered by – specificity.

Brookings Report

A Brookings report noted in November that because federal agencies absorbed many of the directives in Biden’s order, they may protect them from Trump’s repeal. But that protection is looking less and less likely.

AISI and CFPB

Biden’s order established the US AI Safety Institute (AISI), which is part of the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST). The AISI conducted AI model testing and worked with developers to improve safety measures, among other regulatory initiatives. In August, AISI signed agreements with Anthropic and OpenAI to collaborate on safety testing and research; in November, it established a testing and national security task force.

In terms of policy, the single-line directive says only that the US must "sustain and enhance America’s global AI dominance in order to promote human flourishing, economic competitiveness, and national security." Unlike Biden’s order, terms like "safety," "consumer," "data," and "privacy" don’t appear at all. There are no mentions of whether the Trump administration plans to prioritize safeguarding individual protections or address bias in the face of AI development. Instead, it focuses on removing what the White House called "unnecessarily burdensome requirements for companies developing and deploying AI," seemingly focusing on industry advancement.

Conclusion

The Trump administration’s disruption of AISI and CFPB without a formal policy in place to catch fallout leaves AI oversight and compliance in a murky state for at least the next six months. Considering global AI regulation is still far behind the rate of advancement, perhaps it was better to have something rather than nothing.
