I’ll admit that I use AI. I’ve asked it to help me figure out challenging Excel formulas that otherwise would have taken me 45 minutes and a few tutorials to troubleshoot. I’ve used it to help me analyze or organize massive amounts of information. I’ve even asked it to help me devise a running training program aligning with my goals and fitting within my schedule. AI is a fantastic tool–and that’s the point. It’s a tool, not a replacement for thinking.

As AI tools become more capable, more intuitive, and more integrated into our daily lives, I’ve found myself wondering: Are we growing too dependent on AI to do our thinking for us?

This question isn’t just philosophical. It has real consequences, especially for students and young learners. A recent study published in the journal Societies reports that people who used AI tools consistently showed a decline in critical thinking performance. In fact, “whether someone used AI tools was a bigger predictor of a person’s thinking skills than any other factor, including educational attainment.” That’s a staggering finding because it suggests that using AI might not just be a shortcut. It could be a cognitive detour.

The atrophy of the mind

The term “digital dementia” has been used to describe the deterioration of cognitive abilities as a result of over-reliance on digital devices. It’s a phrase originally associated with excessive screen time and memory decline, but it’s found new relevance in the era of generative AI. When we depend on a machine to generate our thoughts, answer our questions, or write our essays, what happens to the neural pathways that govern our own critical thinking? And will the upcoming era of agentic AI expedite this decline?

Cognitive function, like physical fitness, follows the rule of “use it or lose it.” Just as muscles weaken without regular use, the brain’s ability to evaluate, synthesize, and critique information can atrophy when not exercised. This is especially concerning in the context of education, where young learners are still building those critical neural pathways.

In short: Students need to learn how to think before they delegate that thinking to a machine.

Can you still think critically with AI?

Yes, but only if you’re intentional about it.

AI doesn’t relieve you of the responsibility to think–in many cases, it demands even more critical thinking. AI produces hallucinations, falsifies claims, and can be misleading. If you blindly accept AI’s output, you’re not saving time, you’re surrendering clarity.

Using AI effectively requires discernment. You need to know what you’re asking, evaluate what you’re given, and verify the accuracy of the result. In other words, you need to think before, during, and after using AI.

The “source, please” problem

One of the simplest ways to teach critical thinking is also the most annoying–just ask my teenage daughter. When she presents a fact or claim that she saw online, I respond with some version of: “What’s your source?” It drives her crazy, but it forces her to dig deeper, check assumptions, and distinguish between fact and fiction. It’s an essential habit of mind.

But here’s the thing: AI doesn’t always give you the source. And when it does, sometimes it’s wrong, or the source isn’t reputable. Sometimes it requires a deeper dive (and a few more prompts) to find answers, especially to complicated topics. AI often provides quick, confident answers that fall apart under scrutiny.

So why do we keep relying on it? Why are AI responses allowed to settle arguments, or serve as “truth” for students when the answers may be anything but?

The lure of speed and simplicity

It’s easier. It’s faster. And let’s face it: It feels like thinking. But there’s a difference between getting an answer and understanding it. AI gives us answers. It doesn’t teach us how to ask better questions or how to judge when an answer is incomplete or misleading.

This process of cognitive offloading (where we shift mental effort to a device) can be incredibly efficient. But if we offload too much, too early, we risk weakening the mental muscles needed for sustained critical thinking.

Implications for educators

So, what does this mean for the classroom?

First, educators must be discerning about how they use AI tools. These technologies aren’t going away, and banning them outright is neither realistic nor wise. But they must be introduced with guardrails. Students need explicit instruction on how to think alongside AI, not instead of it.

Second, teachers should emphasize the importance of original thought, iterative questioning, and evidence-based reasoning. Instead of asking students to simply generate answers, ask them to critique AI-generated ones. Challenge them to fact-check, source, revise, and reflect. In doing so, we keep their cognitive skills active and growing.

And finally, for young learners, we may need to draw a harder line. Students who haven’t yet formed the foundational skills of analysis, synthesis, and evaluation shouldn’t be skipping those steps. Just like you wouldn’t hand a calculator to a child who hasn’t yet learned to add, we shouldn’t hand over generative AI tools to students who haven’t learned how to write, question, or reason.

A tool, not a crutch

AI is here to stay. It’s powerful, transformative, and, when used well, can enhance our work and learning. But we must remember that it’s a tool, not a replacement for human thought. The moment we let it think for us is the moment we start to lose the capacity to think for ourselves.

If we want the next generation to be capable, curious, and critically-minded, we must protect and nurture those skills. And that means using AI thoughtfully, sparingly, and always with a healthy dose of skepticism. AI is certainly proving it has staying power, so it’s in all our best interests to learn to adapt. However, let’s adapt with intentionality, and without sacrificing our critical thinking skills or succumbing to any form of digital dementia.

Flux is a great model, don’t get me wrong but there is one thing that gives flux a bad name which is the plastic skin and the flux chin. The fix had been to train and use various different LoRAs to enhance the skin but in my experience many of them work well when you generate the first image within 1024×1024 dimension. After that when you start to increase the size and upscale the image lot of the flux characteristics come back to haunt you.

Here is what I mean with the plastic skin.

But this week I learnt about a new model that introduces realistic skin details and textures that finally remove the glossy and oily skin that we were used to get out of Flux Dev/Schnell. The model is called SRPO by Tencent and is available on Hugging Face, it is massive though weighing in at 47GB.

Of course at happens in the AI space these days, a few minutes later we have distilled versions available as well:

The original and distilled version all are designed to run on ComfyUI and there are workflows (JSON) available in the repos along with the models.

I have to say that I went with the FP8 version by Wikeeyang and tested on my RTX4080 with 16GB VRAM.

If you use my RunPod notebook I have already updated the configurations for the Model Manager with the Original and FP8/16 versions on it. GGUF version is quite small so that’s more local use only so I don’t include it in the configurations of Model Manager.

Results with this new model you can compare below. Some of the images generated are with the same seed and prompt so the comparison is easily possible.

Editing tools now available in Amazon Bedrock

Stability AI Image Services span 9 tools across two categories: Edit and Control. Each tool handles specific editing tasks that typically require specialized software or manual intervention.

Edit: Advanced capabilities for granular editing steps

The tools in the Edit category make complex editing tasks more accessible and efficient.

The suite begins with fundamental yet powerful retouching tools. The Erase Object tool, for example, removes unwanted elements from images while intelligently maintaining background consistency. The following animation showcases the Erase Object tool removing a mannequin from a product shot while preserving the background. The tool can transform a source image based on a mask image or derive the mask from the source image’s alpha channel.

The Remove Background tool automatically isolates subjects with precision. This enables the creation of clean, professional product listings with consistent backgrounds or a variety of lifestyle settings, which is a game changer for ecommerce.

The following example illustrates the removal of an image background, while preserving details of a furniture product in the foreground.

The Search and Recolor and Search and Replace tools target specific elements within images for modification. Search and Recolor changes object colors; for example, showing different colorways of a dress without new photoshoots. In the following illustration, Search and Recolor changes the color swatch on furniture.

Search and Replace can swap objects entirely, which is useful for updating seasonal elements in marketing materials or replacing products. The following is an application of Search and Replace for virtual try-on experiences.

The Inpaint tool intelligently modifies images by filling in or replacing specified areas with new content based on the content of a mask image.

Control: Structural and stylistic precision

This category of tools provides precise manipulation of image structure and style through three specialized tools.

The Sketch tool transforms sketch-style renderings into photorealistic concepts. Architecture firms might use this to convert conceptual drawings into realistic visualizations, and apparel brands to turn design sketches into product mockups. The tool helps accelerate the creative production process from initial concepts to final visual execution.

In this example, the Sketch tool transforms a building architecture drawing to help real estate developers visualize the concept against a cityscape.

In another example, the Sketch tool transforms a mannequin drawing into a photorealistic model shot.

The Structure tool maintains the structural elements of input images while allowing content modification. This tool helps preserve layouts, compositions, and spatial relationships while changing subjects or styles. Creative teams can use the Structure tool to recreate scenes with different subjects or render new characters while maintaining consistent framing.

The following example demonstrates the Structure tool transforming a workshop scene into a new scene while preserving the composition and spatial relationships.

The Style Guide and Style Transfer tools help marketing teams produce new images that align with brand style and guidelines. The Style Guide tool takes artistic styles and colors from a reference style image and generates new images based on text prompts.

In the following example, the Style Guide tool takes clues from a brand’s color palette and textures and generates new images matching brand identity.

The Style Transfer tool uses visual characteristics from reference images to transform existing images, while preserving the original composition. For example, a home decor retailer can transform product imagery from modern minimalist to traditional styles without new photography. Marketing teams could create seasonal variations by applying different visual styles to existing product catalogs.

Solution overview

To demonstrate Stability AI Image Services in Amazon Bedrock, let’s walk through an example using a Jupyter notebook found in the GitHub repo.

Prerequisites

To follow along, you must have the following prerequisites:

Create a SageMaker AI notebook instance

Complete the following steps to create a SageMaker AI notebook instance, which can be used to run the sample notebook:

  1. On the SageMaker AI console, in the navigation pane, under Applications and IDEs, choose Notebooks.
  2. Choose Create notebook instance.
  3. For Notebook instance name, enter a name for your notebook instance (for example, ai-images-notebook-instance).
  4. For Notebook Instance type, choose ml.t2.medium.
  5. For Platform identifier, choose Amazon Linux 2.
  6. For IAM role, choose either an existing IAM role, which has the AmazonSageMakerFullAccess and AmazonBedrockLimitedAccess policies attached, or choose Create a new role.
  7. Note the name of the IAM role that you chose.
  8. Leave other settings as default and choose Create notebook instance.

After a few minutes, SageMaker AI creates a notebook instance, and its status changes from Pending to InService.

Confirm the IAM role for the notebook instance has the necessary permissions

Complete the following steps to verify that the SageMaker AI execution role that you assigned to the notebook instance has the correct permissions:

  1. On the IAM console, in the navigation pane, under Access management, choose Roles.
  2. In the Roles search bar, enter the name of the SageMaker AI execution role that you used when creating the notebook instance.
  3. Choose the IAM role.
  4. Under Permissions policies, verify that the AWS managed policies AmazonSageMakerFullAccess and AmazonBedrockLimitedAccess are present.
  5. (Optional) If either policy is missing, choose Add permissions, then choose Attach policies to attach the missing policy.
    1. In the Other permissions policies search bar, enter the policy name.
    2. Select the policy, then chose Add permissions.

Run the notebook

Complete the following steps to run the notebook:

  1. On the SageMaker AI console, in the navigation pane, under Applications and IDEs, choose Notebooks.
  2. Choose the newly created ai-images-notebook-instance notebook instance.
  3. Wait for the notebook to be in InService status.
  4. Choose the Open JupyterLab link to launch JupyterLab in a new browser tab.
  5. On the Git menu, choose Clone a Repository.
  6. Enter the URI https://github.com/aws-samples/stabilityai-sample-notebooks.git and select Include submodules and Download the repository.
  7. Choose Clone.
  8. On the File menu, choose Open from path.
  9. Enter the following:
    stabilityai-sample-notebooks/stability-ai-image-services/stability-ai-image-services-sample-notebook.ipynb
  10. Choose Open.
  11. When prompted, choose the kernel conda_python3, then choose Select.
  12. Run through each notebook cell to experience Stability AI Image Services in Amazon Bedrock.

Clean up

To avoid ongoing charges, stop the ai-images-notebook-instance SageMaker AI notebook instance that you created in this walkthrough:

  1. On the SageMaker AI console, in the navigation pane, under Applications and IDEs, choose Notebooks.
  2. Choose the ai-images-notebook-instance SageMaker AI notebook instance that you created.
  3. Choose Actions, then choose Stop.

After a few minutes, the notebook instance transitions from Stopping to Stopped status.

  1. Choose Actions, then Delete.

After a few seconds, SageMaker AI deletes the notebook instance.

What comes next for this powerful but imperfect tool?

With that question in mind, hundreds of researchers, business leaders, educators, and students gathered at MIT’s Kresge Auditorium for the inaugural MIT Generative AI Impact Consortium (MGAIC) Symposium on Sept. 17 to share insights and discuss the potential future of generative AI.

It is our job to make sure that, as the technology keeps advancing, our collective wisdom keeps pace,” said MIT Provost Anantha Chandrakasan to kick off this first symposium of the MGAIC, a consortium of industry leaders and MIT researchers launched in February to harness the power of generative AI for the good of society.

Underscoring the critical need for this collaborative effort, MIT President Sally Kornbluth said that the world is counting on faculty, researchers, and business leaders like those in MGAIC to tackle the technological and ethical challenges of generative AI as the technology advances.

“Part of MIT’s responsibility is to keep these advances coming for the world. … How can we manage the magic [of generative AI] so that all of us can confidently rely on it for critical applications in the real world?” Kornbluth said.

To keynote speaker Yann LeCun, chief AI scientist at Meta, the most exciting and significant advances in generative AI will most likely not come from continued improvements or expansions of large language models like Llama, GPT, and Claude. Through training, these enormous generative models learn patterns in huge datasets to produce new outputs.

Instead, LuCun and others are working on the development of “world models” that learn the same way an infant does — by seeing and interacting with the world around them through sensory input.

“A 4-year-old has seen as much data through vision as the largest LLM. … The world model is going to become the key component of future AI systems,” he said.

A robot with this type of world model could learn to complete a new task on its own with no training. LeCun sees world models as the best approach for companies to make robots smart enough to be generally useful in the real world.

But even if future generative AI systems do get smarter and more human-like through the incorporation of world models, LeCun doesn’t worry about robots escaping from human control.

Scientists and engineers will need to design guardrails to keep future AI systems on track, but as a society, we have already been doing this for millennia by designing rules to align human behavior with the common good, he said.

“We are going to have to design these guardrails, but by construction, the system will not be able to escape those guardrails,” LeCun said.

Keynote speaker Tye Brady, chief technologist at Amazon Robotics, also discussed how generative AI could impact the future of robotics.

For instance, Amazon has already incorporated generative AI technology into many of its warehouses to optimize how robots travel and move material to streamline order processing.

He expects many future innovations will focus on the use of generative AI in collaborative robotics by building machines that allow humans to become more efficient.

“GenAI is probably the most impactful technology I have witnessed throughout my whole robotics career,” he said.

Other presenters and panelists discussed the impacts of generative AI in businesses, from largescale enterprises like Coca-Cola and Analog Devices to startups like health care AI company Abridge.

Several MIT faculty members also spoke about their latest research projects, including the use of AI to reduce noise in ecological image data, designing new AI systems that mitigate bias and hallucinations, and enabling LLMs to learn more about the visual world.

After a day spent exploring new generative AI technology and discussing its implications for the future, MGAIC faculty co-lead Vivek Farias, the Patrick J. McGovern Professor at MIT Sloan School of Management, said he hoped attendees left with “a sense of possibility, and urgency to make that possibility real.”

A new research report from technology advisory firm Information Services Group (ISG) has revealed AI threats and more stringent regulations are shifting the French cybersecurity landscape, resulting in businesses reassessing their security strategies.

Increasing security budgets mean many French enterprises require fresh guidance and expertise to establish effective priorities and combat their security challenges.

According to the 2025 ISG Provider Lens Cybersecurity – Services and Solutions report, businesses in France are adapting to a more complex, layered security landscape, with many adopting AI-powered defence. This is to meet the demands introduced by new regulations, cloud adoption, financial constraints, and a shortage of skilled workers, the AI security specialist claims.

“The way companies in France choose security services is changing,” said Julien Escribe, partner and managing director, ISG. “With increasing security budgets, enterprises need guidance and insight to set the right priorities and tackle security problems.”

Companies are starting to rely on all-in-one solutions for security, rather than depending on a range of separate tools, according to the report. Organisations seek service providers that can supplement their security teams. Companies migrating to multicloud and cloud topologies face integration, visibility, and management challenges, the company says. Businesses find it hard to maintain oversight of applications, so use solutions like secure access service edge (SASE), which merges network security and connectivity in a unified service.

The report found that French organisations are seeking integrated security platforms for a single view of possible threats and central oversight of their defences. Because of financial stress and a continuing deficit of cybersecurity talent, many businesses still use technical security service (TSS) providers for support, centralised platforms, and automation.

ISG says that French enterprises are have to integrate governance, risk and commence (GRC) policies into their security strategies, because EU regulations like the NIS2 directive and AI Act are becoming French law. More than 15,000 French businesses are now subject to extra compliance, the report states.

The paper shows malicious actors use AI in cyberattacks, which is posing fresh challenges for detection and response. In reaction, companies turn to security service providers that themselves use genAI and ML. Their clients are investing more in AI-driven detection, employee training, and automated responses.

Benoît Scheuber, a principal consultant and security analyst at ISG, said that AI is transforming the cybersecurity landscape, prompting companies to seek providers that can integrate tooling that increases efficiency, saying, “[Clients] seek providers that can integrate the best products into a unified platform for operational efficiency.”

China’s internet regulator has banned the country’s biggest technology companies from buying Nvidia’s artificial intelligence chips, as Beijing steps up efforts to boost its domestic industry and compete with the US.

The Cyberspace Administration of China (CAC) told companies, including ByteDance and Alibaba, this week to end their testing and orders of the RTX Pro 6000D, Nvidia’s tailor-made product for the country, according to three people with knowledge of the matter.

Nvidia shares fell 2.7 per cent in morning trading on Wednesday.

Several companies had indicated they would order tens of thousands of the RTX Pro 6000D, and had started testing and verification work with Nvidia’s server suppliers, the people said.

After receiving the CAC order, the companies told their suppliers to stop the work, the people added.

The ban goes beyond earlier guidance from regulators that focused on the H20, Nvidia’s other China-only chip widely used for AI. It comes after Chinese regulators concluded that domestic chips had attained performance comparable to those of Nvidia’s models used in China.

Jensen Huang, chief executive of Nvidia, told reporters in London on Wednesday that he expected to discuss the chipmaker’s ability to do business in China with Donald Trump that evening during the US president’s state visit to the UK.

“We can only be in service of a market if the country wants us to be,” he said. “I’m disappointed with what I see. But they have larger agendas to work out, between China and the US, and I’m understanding of that. We are patient about it.” 

Beijing is putting pressure on Chinese tech companies to boost the country’s homegrown semiconductor industry and break their reliance on Nvidia so it can compete in an AI race against the US.

“The message is now loud and clear,” said an executive at one of the tech companies. “Earlier, people had hopes of renewed Nvidia supply if the geopolitical situation improves. Now it’s all hands on deck to build the domestic system.”

Nvidia started producing chips tailored for the Chinese market after former US President Joe Biden banned the company from exporting its most powerful products to China, in an effort to rein in Beijing’s progress on AI.

Beijing’s regulators have recently summoned domestic chipmakers such as Huawei and Cambricon, as well as Alibaba and search engine giant Baidu, which also make their own semiconductors, to report how their products compare against Nvidia’s China chips, according to one of the people with knowledge of the matter.

They concluded that China’s AI processors had reached a level comparable to or exceeding that of the Nvidia products allowed under export controls, the person added.

The Financial Times reported last month that China’s chipmakers were seeking to triple the country’s total output of AI processors next year.

“The top-level consensus now is there’s going to be enough domestic supply to meet demand without having to buy Nvidia chips,” said an industry insider.

Nvidia introduced the RTX Pro 6000D in July during Huang’s visit to Beijing, when the US company also said Washington was easing its previous ban on the H20 chip.

China’s regulators, including the CAC, have warned tech companies against buying Nvidia’s H20, asking them to justify having purchased them over domestic products, the FT reported last month.

The RTX Pro 6000D, which the company has said could be used in automated manufacturing, was the last product Nvidia was allowed to sell in China in significant volumes.

Alibaba, ByteDance, the CAC and Nvidia did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

As a former teacher, educator coach, and principal, I’ve witnessed countless edtech promises come and go. The latest refrain echoes through conference halls and staff meetings: “AI saves teachers X hours a week.” While time is undeniably precious in our profession, this narrative sells both educators and students short. After years of working at the intersection of pedagogy and technology, I’ve come to believe that if we only use AI to do the same things faster, we’re not innovating–we’re just optimizing yesterday.

The real opportunity: From efficiency to impact

Great teaching has never been about efficiency. It’s iterative, adaptive, and deeply human. Teachers read the room, adjust pace mid-lesson, and recognize that moment when understanding dawns in a student’s eyes. Yet most AI tools flatten this beautiful complexity into task lists: generate a worksheet, create a quiz, save time, done.

The question we should be asking isn’t, “How do I get through prep faster?” but rather, “What would I try if I didn’t have to start from scratch?”

Consider the pedagogical best practices we know drive student success: timely personalized feedback, inquiry-based learning, differentiation, regular formative assessments, and fostering metacognition. These are time-intensive practices that many educators struggle to implement consistently–not for lack of desire, but for lack of bandwidth.

AI as a pedagogical ally

When AI is truly designed for education–not just wrapped around a large language model–it becomes a pedagogical ally that reduces barriers to best practices. I recently observed a teacher who’d always wanted to create differentiated choice boards for her diverse learners but never had the time to build them. With AI-powered tools that understand learning progressions and can generate standards-aligned content variations, she transformed a single instructional idea into personalized pathways for 30 students in minutes, then spent her saved time having one-on-one conferences with struggling readers.

This is the multiplier effect. AI didn’t replace her professional judgment; it amplified her impact by removing the mechanical barriers to her pedagogical vision.

Creativity unleashed, not automated

The educators I work with already have innovative ideas, but often lack the time and resources to bring them to life. When we frame AI as a creative partner rather than a productivity tool, something shifts. Teachers begin asking: What if I could finally try project-based learning without spending weekends creating materials? What if I could provide immediate, specific feedback to every student, not just the few I can reach during class?

We’ve seen educators use AI to experiment with flipped classrooms, design escape room reviews, and create interactive scenarios that would have taken days to develop manually. The AI handles the heavy lifting of content generation, alignment, and interactivity, while teachers focus on what only they can do: inspire, connect, and guide.

Educators are the true catalysts

As we evaluate AI tools for our schools, we must look beyond time saved to amplified impact. Does the tool respect teaching’s complexity? Does it support iterative, adaptive instruction? Most importantly, does it free educators to do what they do best?

The catalysts for educational transformation have always been educators themselves. AI’s purpose isn’t to automate teaching, but to clear space for the creativity, experimentation, and human connection that define great pedagogy. When we embrace this vision, we move from doing the same things faster to doing transformative things we never thought possible.
