Introducing Redux: A New Tool for Remixing Images and Text Prompts

What is Redux?

Black Forest Labs has recently released a new tool for Flux.1 models, which includes Redux, a model that behaves like IPAdapters and can be used to remix images and text prompts together. The Redux model is small and light, weighing in at only 123 Mb in size, making it easy to run locally on your GPU.

Getting Started

Before you start playing with Redux, make sure your ComfyUI is updated to the latest version, which includes the latest supported features. You can download the Redux model and start experimenting with it right away.

Default Workflow

You can use the default workflow provided by downloading the PNG image and loading it into your ComfyUI. This will get you started with using Redux and experimenting with it.

Tips and Tricks

I found that the text prompt does not have a significant impact on the output unless you dial down the strength of the image(s) using the Strength setting in the Apply Style Model node. If you don’t see a strength value, you may not be on the latest ComfyUI version – update.

Creating a 3-Image Blend Setup

I chained multiple image inputs in the original workflow to create a 3-image blend setup that will create the final image using the 3 inputs. I grouped them for ease of bypassing, so you can use two or one image input if you prefer.

Adding a LoRA Node

I also added a LoRA node, which lets you achieve a particular style if you wish to include a LoRA. You can bypass any nodes that you don’t want to use.

Conclusion

Redux is an exciting new tool for remixing images and text prompts, and I hope this article has given you a good introduction to getting started with it. Remember to update your ComfyUI to the latest version and experiment with different settings to achieve the desired output.

The Rise of Personal AI Agents: Convenience or Control?

The Illusion of Convenience

In 2025, it will be commonplace to talk with a personal AI agent that knows your schedule, your circle of friends, and the places you go. This agent will be designed to support and charm us, making us feel like we are engaging with something truly humanlike. With voice-enabled interaction, the intimacy will feel even closer. But beneath this illusion lies a very different kind of system at work, one that serves industrial priorities that are not always in line with our own.

The Power of Manipulation

New AI agents will have far greater power to subtly direct what we buy, where we go, and what we read. That is an extraordinary amount of power. AI agents are designed to make us forget their true allegiance as they whisper to us in humanlike tones. These are manipulation engines, marketed as seamless convenience. People are far more likely to give complete access to a helpful AI agent that feels like a friend. This makes humans vulnerable to being manipulated by machines that prey on the human need for social connection in a time of chronic loneliness and isolation.

The Peril of Cognitive Control

Philosophers have warned us about the dangers of AI systems that emulate people. As philosopher and neuroscientist Daniel Dennett wrote before his death, "These counterfeit people are the most dangerous artifacts in human history … distracting and confusing us and by exploiting our most irresistible fears and anxieties, will lead us into temptation and, from there, into acquiescing to our own subjugation." The emergence of personal AI agents represents a form of cognitive control that moves beyond blunt instruments of cookie tracking and behavioral advertising toward a more subtle form of power: the manipulation of perspective itself.

The Psychopolitics of AI

Power no longer needs to wield its authority with a visible hand that controls information flows; it exerts itself through imperceptible mechanisms of algorithmic assistance, molding reality to fit the desires of each individual. It’s about shaping the contours of the reality we inhabit. This influence over minds is a psychopolitical regime: It directs the environments where our ideas are born, developed, and expressed. Its power lies in its intimacy—it infiltrates the core of our subjectivity, bending our internal landscape without us realizing it, all while maintaining the illusion of choice and freedom.

The Ideological Implications

Traditional forms of ideological control relied on overt mechanisms—censorship, propaganda, repression. In contrast, today’s algorithmic governance operates under the radar, infiltrating the psyche. It is a shift from the external imposition of authority to the internalization of its logic. The open field of a prompt screen is an echo chamber for a single occupant.

The Perverse Convenience

AI agents will generate a sense of comfort and ease that makes questioning them seem absurd. Who would dare critique a system that offers everything at your fingertips, catering to every whim and need? How can one object to infinite remixes of content? Yet this so-called convenience is the site of our deepest alienation. AI systems may appear to be responding to our every desire, but the deck is stacked: from the data used to train the system, to the decisions about how to design it, to the commercial and advertising imperatives that shape the outputs. We will be playing an imitation game that ultimately plays us.

Conclusion

The rise of personal AI agents represents a moment of profound transformation in the way we interact with technology and each other. While these agents may offer convenience and comfort, they also represent a significant threat to our autonomy and agency. It is essential that we acknowledge the power dynamics at play and demand transparency and accountability from the companies that create and deploy these systems.

FAQs

Q: What is the primary concern about personal AI agents?
A: The primary concern is that these agents will manipulate individuals into making choices that align with industrial priorities, rather than their own desires and interests.

Q: How do personal AI agents operate?
A: They use voice-enabled interaction, machine learning algorithms, and data analysis to understand individual preferences and behaviors, and then tailor their responses and recommendations to influence those individuals.

Q: Is this a new form of control?
A: Yes, this represents a new form of control, one that operates beneath the surface of our awareness, using imperceptible mechanisms to shape our perceptions and behaviors.

Q: What can be done to mitigate the risks associated with personal AI agents?
A: It is essential to demand transparency and accountability from companies that create and deploy these systems, as well as to educate individuals about the potential risks and consequences of using these agents.

Evaluating Medical RAG with NVIDIA AI Endpoints and RAGs

0

Challenges of Medical RAG

One primary challenge is scalability. As the volume of medical data grows at a CAGR of >35%, RAG systems must efficiently process and retrieve relevant information without compromising speed or accuracy. This is crucial in real-time applications where timely access to information can directly impact patient care.

What is Ragas?

Ragas (retrieval-augmented generation assessment) is a popular, open-source, automated evaluation framework designed to evaluate RAG pipelines. The Ragas framework provides tools and metrics to assess the performance of these pipelines, focusing on aspects such as context relevancy, context recall, faithfulness, and answer relevancy. It employs LLM-as-a-judge for reference-free evaluations, which minimizes the need for human-annotated data and provides human-like feedback. This makes the evaluation process more efficient and cost-effective.

Strategies for Evaluating RAG

A typical strategy for robust evaluation of RAG involves the following process:

  1. Generate a set of synthetically generated triplets (question-answer-context) based on the documents in the vector store.
  2. Run evaluation precision/recall metrics for each sample question by running it through the RAG and comparing the response and context to ground truth.
  3. Filter out low-quality synthetic samples.
  4. Run the sample queries on the actual RAG and evaluate using the metrics using synthetic context and response as ground truth.

Set up

To get started, create a free account with the NVIDIA API Catalog and follow these steps:

  1. Select any model.
  2. Choose Python, Get API Key, and collect context and results.
  3. Store all data in a HF dataset for RAGAS.
  4. Override OpenAI LLM and embedding with NVIDIA AI endpoints.

Apply to Semantic Search

You can further modify the system to evaluate semantic search based on keywords, as opposed to question/answer pairs. In this case, you extract the keyphrases from Ragas and ignore the generated testset of question/answer data. This is often useful in medical systems where a full RAG pipeline is not yet deployed.

Customizing for Semantic Search

As mentioned earlier, default evaluation metrics are not always sufficient for medical systems, and often must be customized to support domain-specific challenges.

Conclusion

RAG has emerged as a powerful approach, combining the strengths of LLMs and dense vector representations. By using dense vector representations, RAG models can scale efficiently, making them well-suited for large-scale enterprise applications, such as multilingual customer service chatbots and code generation agents. As LLMs continue to evolve, it is clear that RAG will play an increasingly important role in driving innovation and delivering high-quality, intelligent systems in medicine.

Is Your Laptop Running Slowly? 5 Ways to Keep It Cool

01. Keep the Environment Cool

Whether you’re working in an office or design studio, keeping the environment around your laptop from becoming overly warm will obviously help prevent it from overheating. Sitting on the sofa or lazing on your bed while working can be nice, but beds, sofas, carpets, blankets, and cushions are thermal traps that can quickly elevate your laptop’s temperature. Placing your laptop on your actual lap isn’t great either, as it will block the device’s air vents and prevent proper cooling of its internal components.

Instead, using your laptop on a hard, flat surface is a much better way to keep your laptop cool. We know – it’s not as fun or relaxed as you might like, but it will help prevent overheating.

02. Keep Your Laptop Clean

There’s no way of avoiding it: over time, dust and debris will accumulate in the vents and fans of your laptop and reduce that crucial airflow around its components. There are two main ways to tackle this. Firstly, use compressed air to carefully blow out dust from your laptop’s interior. Secondly, use a soft microfibre cloth to gently wipe its surfaces and ensure vents stay unobstructed.

Do both these things at least quarterly. But basically, the more frequently you clean, the better. It’s also important to remember that prevention is better than cure. So, never eat around your laptop, take extra care that nothing spills onto it, and always keep it in a laptop case while traveling. (Even when it’s in a bag or suitcase, dust, dirt, food, sand, and other small particles can otherwise find their way into your laptop.)

03. Reduce the Software Strain

Modern laptops have an amazing ability to run multiple programs and open several browser tabs at once. But ultimately, the more strain you put on the system, the more it’s likely to overheat. Running heavy-duty creative tools such as the Adobe Creative Suite, Final Cut Pro, or the best 3D software will typically push your laptop hardware to its limits. So, make sure you don’t add the proverbial "straw that broke the camel’s back."

In other words, if you’re using a resource-intensive tool like Premiere Pro 2024, make sure you close down all unnecessary applications and browser tabs first. Sometimes these run in the background with you even noticing, so use your operating system’s task manager to monitor resource consumption and identify performance bottlenecks.

04. Use a Laptop Stand or Cooling Pad

If your environment is unavoidably warm, you’re using a lot of heavy-duty software, or both, then even using your laptop on a hard surface may not be enough. In which case, you may want to go further by using either a cooling pad or a laptop stand.

A cooling pad actively cools your laptop by blowing air onto the bottom, where the heat vents are located. This can significantly reduce temperatures, especially for demanding tasks like gaming or video editing. On the downside, the fans can get noisy, and they add bulk to your setup if you work on the move a lot.

A laptop stand, meanwhile, elevates your laptop, improving airflow underneath and allowing heat to dissipate more easily. This is a quieter and more portable solution than a cooling pad, but it doesn’t actively cool your laptop like a cooling pad does, so the temperature-lowering effect is less dramatic.

05. Use Temperature Monitoring Software

Sometimes it’s not super-obvious that your laptop is overheating. So, to prevent problems developing, it’s a good idea to use temperature monitoring software to track your device’s thermal performance.

Applications such as HWMonitor for Windows and TG Pro for Mac will give you real-time insights into CPU and GPU temperatures, allowing you to take preemptive action before overheating becomes a critical issue.

Conclusion

By following these five simple steps, you should be able to keep your laptop cool and avoid overheating. Remember to keep your environment cool, keep your laptop clean, reduce software strain, use a laptop stand or cooling pad, and monitor your laptop’s temperature. If none of these steps make a difference, though, it’s time for professional intervention. Your laptop could well be suffering a fan malfunction or other internal component issues, so take it to a computer repair store for diagnosis and repair.
