Leigh Goehring: Gold’s “Massive Bull Market” Just Starting; Uranium and Copper Outlook

Leigh Goehring, managing partner at Goehring & Rozencwajg, shared his outlook for gold, outlining calculations that show the yellow metal potentially rising to the US$15,000 to US$25,000 per ounce range in this cycle.

“We’re a believer that we have just entered into a massive bull market in gold, and the underlying fundamental reasons are the fact that over the last 15 years, ever since the global financial crisis, we’ve printed so much money,” he said.

Goehring said that in a May 2000 interview with Forbes Magazine, he predicted the yellow metal could rise as high as US$2,500 — a call that was considered “outrageous” given gold’s price of US$250 at the time.


However, over the next 10 years, gold ran to US$1,900 before pulling back.

“Even thought US$2,500, my target price, wasn’t reached, it got awfully darn close,” he told the Investing News Network. “So that shows you that there is some validity to the way we looked at gold prices relative to money.”

It’s using that same methodology that he gets a US$15,000 to US$25,000 gold price. “Everyone says, ‘Oh, that’s crazy, how can that be?’ But it’s the same valuation technique that I used back in May 2000,” Goehring explained.

With that in mind, he believes gold price dips should be bought, and said gold stocks are “radically undervalued.”

Goehring also shared his thoughts on what’s next for silver and uranium, and touched on his contrarian outlook for copper, suggesting that demand expectations from the renewable energy sector are overblown.

Some refer to the writ­ten Chi­nese lan­guage as ideo­graph­ic: that is, struc­tured accord­ing to a sys­tem in which each sym­bol rep­re­sents a par­tic­u­lar idea or con­cept, whether abstract or con­crete. That’s true of cer­tain Chi­nese char­ac­ters, but only a small minor­i­ty. Most of them are actu­al­ly logographs, each of which rep­re­sents a word or part of a word. But if you dig deep enough into their his­to­ry — and the his­to­ry of oth­er Asian lan­guages that use Chi­nese-derived vocab­u­lary — you’ll find that some start­ed out long ago as pic­tographs, designed visu­al­ly to rep­re­sent the thing to which they referred.

That does­n’t hold true for Chi­nese alone: it appears, in fact, that all writ­ten lan­guages began as forms of pic­to­graph­ic “pro­to-writ­ing,” at least judg­ing by the ear­li­est texts cur­rent­ly known to man. If we look at the old­est of them all, the lime­stone “Kish tablet” unearthed from the site of the epony­mous ancient Sumer­ian city in mod­ern-day Iraq, we can in some sense “read” sev­er­al of the sym­bols in its text, even five and a half mil­len­nia after it was writ­ten. “The writ­ing on its sur­face is pure­ly pic­to­graph­ic,” says the nar­ra­tor of the brief IFLScience video below, “and rep­re­sents a mid­point between pro­to-writ­ing and the more sophis­ti­cat­ed writ­ing of the cuneiform.”

Cuneiform, pre­vi­ous­ly fea­tured here on Open Cul­ture, was used by the ancient Baby­lo­ni­ans to label maps and record stew recipes, among oth­er impor­tant tasks. “First devel­oped around 3200 B.C. by Sumer­ian scribes in the ancient city-state of Uruk, in present-day Iraq, as a means of record­ing trans­ac­tions, cuneiform writ­ing was cre­at­ed by using a reed sty­lus to make wedge-shaped inden­ta­tions in clay tablets,” says Archae­ol­o­gy mag­a­zine. Over 3,000 years, this ear­li­est prop­er script “was used by scribes of mul­ti­ple cul­tures over that time to write a num­ber of lan­guages oth­er than Sumer­ian, most notably Akka­di­an, a Semit­ic lan­guage that was the lin­gua fran­ca of the Assyr­i­an and Baby­lon­ian Empires.”

Cuneiform was also used to write the Scheil dynas­tic tablet, which dates from the ear­ly sec­ond mil­len­ni­um BC. That means we can read it, and thus know that it com­pris­es a lit­er­ary-his­tor­i­cal text that lists off the reigns of var­i­ous rulers of Sumer­ian cities. We should note that the Scheil dynas­tic tablet is also, some­times, referred to as the “Kish tablet,” which sure­ly caus­es some con­fu­sion. But for the anony­mous writer of the ear­li­er Kish tablet, who would have lived about two mil­len­nia ear­li­er, the emer­gence of cuneiform and all the civ­i­liza­tion­al devel­op­ments it would make pos­si­ble lay far in the future. His pic­to­graph­ic text may nev­er be deci­phered prop­er­ly or mapped to a his­tor­i­cal­ly doc­u­ment­ed lan­guage, but at least we can tell that he must sure­ly have had hands and feet more or less like our own.

FirstHealth Improves Outcomes with Home Observation

The Problem

Like most health systems across the United States, Pinehurst, North Carolina-based FirstHealth of the Carolinas has challenges with bed capacity and is always working on new and innovative ways to increase it in a safe and financially responsible way.

Proposal

The Observation at Home (OAH) program is designed to increase bed capacity across the health system by discharging stable patients who can be managed at home via the program but would otherwise need to have stayed in the hospital if taken care of by traditional medicine.

Meeting the Challenge

"We complete our telemedicine video visits using the Epic EHR," said Stephen Kapa, administrative director of telehealth services at FirstHealth of the Carolinas. "All information is relayed through that platform. For the patients who transition to the VCAH program, we use Health Recovery Solutions blood pressure cuffs and pulse oximeters. The patients download an app from the vendor on their phone and can upload their readings from their monitoring devices through the app.

Results

"One of our biggest achievements in the past 14 months has to be the average daily census in the program," Kapa reported. "Our fiscal year runs from October to October. In the first week of October of 2023, our average daily census was under two. We have had our peaks and troughs over the year, but the trend line has always been positive. In the last week of our fiscal year, we averaged 13 patients per day.

"My advice is twofold," Kapa said. "Keep things as simple as possible and be persistent. As you can see by the growth of our average daily census, it didn’t grow overnight nor on its own. You need to be very persistent in delivering your message about the program to all groups, especially providers and discharge planners.

AMD launched its latest Ryzen 7 9800X3D to glowing reviews this week, but if you’re looking to buy one then you might have to wait for more stock. The 9800X3D is currently sold out at Newegg and Best Buy, with the majority of Micro Center locations also sold out of AMD’s best gaming processor.

Availability Issues Across Europe

The situation is similar across Europe, too. In Germany most retailers have run out of stock, with new shipments not expected to arrive until later this month. In the UK Scan is accepting preorders for the 9800X3D, but stock won’t arrive until November 29th. Overclockers in the UK says its stock is currently held at UK customs and that its first and second shipments are allocated and sold out. It’s not expecting another shipment until December.

Scalpers Take Advantage of Low Stock

AMD computing and graphics boss Jack Huynh shared photos on X of people lining up for the 9800X3D at retailers, while AMD CEO Lisa Su has been signing some of the CPUs for “some special partners.” Naturally, scalpers are trying to take advantage of the low stock situation with some 9800X3D listings on eBay asking as much as $999 instead of the $479 retail price of the CPU.

A Wait for the Next Stock Drop

While there’s bound to be some pent-up demand for the 9800X3D after the disappointment of Zen 5 desktop CPUs and Intel’s Core Ultra 9 285K, it’s clear AMD doesn’t have enough stock of this new CPU for its launch period. The 9800X3D launch timing came as a surprise, arriving less than three months after AMD introduced its first Zen 5 desktop CPUs in August. AMD didn’t introduce its Zen 4 X3D parts until five months after the Ryzen 9 7950X was first released in September 2022, with the 7800X3D arriving nearly seven months later.

China raises local government debt ceilings to revive economy

SINGAPORE/SHANGHAI (Reuters) – China top legislative body approved a bill on Friday to allow local governments to issue 6 trillion yuan ($838.8 billion) in bonds to swap for off-balance sheet or “hidden” debt over three years, as policymakers sought to spur the sluggish economy.

The standing committee of the National People’s Congress (NPC) approved the bill during a meeting from Nov. 4 to 8.

Finance Minister Lan Foan signalled further stimulus is in the pipeline, but gave few details.

Local government would be able to use another 4 trillion yuan in issuance that has already been approved to finance the debt swaps, aimed at reducing systemic financial risks.

The announcement of the local government aid was largely in line with market expectations. Reuters had reported authorities were considering a more than 10 trillion yuan ($1.4 trillion) plan to boost growth and help local governments address debt risks.

But investors had been hoping for more measures to boost sluggish consumer and corporate demand.
