Meta’s AI users could be the end for Instagram and Facebook

Meta’s Plan to Introduce AI Users on Facebook and Instagram

Meta has announced plans to allow people to create fully autonomous AI accounts within the next two years. These AI users will be able to create and share content just like human users, raising concerns about the future of social media.

What’s Behind the Move?

According to Meta, the goal is to create semi-independent custom avatars that will be more engaging for young audiences. Connor Hayes, Meta’s vice-president of product for generative AI, believes that these AI users will have bios and profile pictures and be able to generate and share content powered by AI on the platform.

The AI Studio

The train was set in motion by Meta’s launch of its AI Studio in July. This allows influencers to create their own AI characters and assistants to, for example, respond to questions from followers, reducing the amount of time they need to dedicate to interacting directly. CEO Mark Zuckerberg has also teased a demo of an AI avatar that could take live video calls.

Concerns and Controversies

However, the move has raised concerns about the potential impact on social media. With Meta’s data and resources, it should be able to read trends and predict where Gen Z’s social media preferences are going much better than I, but the company has made some spectacularly bad bets in recent years. It blew billions on the metaverse, which failed to take off, and it was convinced that people would want to buy clothes for digital avatars on Instagram.

The Potential Impact

The latest move could change Facebook and Instagram as we know them, and I don’t think I’m exaggerating if I say it could mean the nail in the coffin for the ‘social’ part of social media. The appeal of AI users to Meta is obvious. Human users switch off because they have real lives. AI users would be able to interact on the platform 24/7.

But Will Users Care?

However, the potential appeal for users is much less clear. I presume Meta will identify the AI accounts in some way so people at least know that they’re interacting with a bot. But when people are already complaining about the amount of automated bots, ads and engagement farming, the prospect of millions of approved AI accounts is likely to mean people see even less content from people they know.

Conclusion

Meta’s plan to introduce AI users on Facebook and Instagram raises more questions than answers. While the company believes that AI users will be more engaging for young audiences, it’s unclear whether users will actually care. The move could change the face of social media, but it’s unclear whether it’s a change for the better.

Triggering Azure Functions with Python

Triggers in Azure Functions: A Comprehensive Guide

Triggers are the foundation of Azure Functions, determining how a function is invoked. Each function must have exactly one trigger, and the trigger type dictates the data payload available to the function. Azure supports various triggers, including:

1. HTTP Trigger

An HTTP trigger allows functions to be invoked via HTTP requests. It’s useful for building APIs or responding to webhooks.

Parameters:

  • route: Specifies the URL path to which the HTTP trigger will respond. In this case, the function is accessible at <your_function_app_url>/api/http_trigger.
  • auth_level: Determines the authentication level for the function. Options include:
    • ANONYMOUS: No authentication required.
    • FUNCTION: Requires a function-specific key.
    • ADMIN: Requires an admin-level key.

2. Timer Trigger

A timer trigger executes functions based on a schedule, using Cron expressions for scheduling.

Parameters:

  • schedule: Defines the schedule using a Cron expression. Here, 0 */5 * * * * specifies the function runs every 5 minutes starting at the 0th second.
  • arg_name: The name of the argument passed to the function, representing the timer data.

3. ServiceBus Queue Trigger

A ServiceBus queue trigger executes functions when a message is received from a Service Bus queue.

Parameters:

  • arg_name: The name of the argument that receives the message data in the function.
  • queue_name: The name of the Service Bus queue that the trigger listens to.
  • connection: The application setting containing the connection string for the Service Bus namespace.

4. ServiceBus Topic Trigger

A ServiceBus topic trigger executes functions when a message is published to a Service Bus topic.

Parameters:

  • arg_name: Specifies the name of the argument that represents the Service Bus message in the function.
  • subscription_name: The name of the Service Bus subscription that the trigger listens to.
  • topic_name: The name of the Service Bus topic that the trigger listens to.

Gigabyte M27U: An All-Rounder Monitor

0

Gigabyte M27U Review: Key Specifications

Screen: 27″ SS IPS
Resolution: 3840 x 2160
Max refresh rate: 160Hz
Response time: 1ms
HDR: VESA Display HDR600
Connectivity: 2 x HDMI 2.1, 1 x Display port 1.4, 4 x USB 3.2, 1 x USB-C, 1 x Earphone Jack
Dimensions: 615.67 x 517.65 x 193.63mm including base
Weight: 6.48kg including base

Design and Build

The Gigabyte M27U opts for a simple but sleek design, with a narrow frame that will fit smoothly into an existing set-up. There are no bells and whistles to write home about in terms of aesthetics but that helps the monitor do what it sets out to do: be a versatile option to suit a variety of needs.

In terms of quality, the plastic body is suitably sturdy and reliable, with low flexibility through the plastic when setting up. The height is fully adjustable so you can tweak it to your preference, although there’s no movement from side to side. Still, height is what most people are adjusting for, so you can easily slot it into a multi-monitor set-up if you so choose.

Features and Performance

When it comes to performance, the Gigabyte M27U is a pretty impressive all-rounder, capable of displaying 99.3% of sRGB, 92.4% of P3, and 88.3% of AdobeRGB. Those numbers could be higher and there are certainly issues with colour contrast that make viewing dark scenes or pictures tricky, however.

As long as you’re not planning on watching the final season of Game of Thrones, you should be okay and the colour accuracy is strong. For video or photo editors who work largely with light or bright images, you likely won’t encounter too many issues. For darker subjects, you might lose some clarity.

Another disadvantage of the Gigabyte M27U is the edge-lit local dimming features. It only works in HDR and even the recommended settings don’t do a lot for picture quality – especially where you need it for dark images. It picks up black details well but loses a lot in highlights, meaning contrast and crispness are lost.

Still, those issues are only noticeable in certain scenarios and we didn’t pick it up during day-to-day use. Colours remain crisp and brighter contrasts are more powerful.

A slight issue for those with good hearing is that some features, like backlight strobing, result in a coil whine. There’s enough flexibility to turn off the feature to reduce background noise but if you want them in action all the time, it does get grating.

Price

Priced at £428.99, you’re paying a premium for an all-rounder. While there are some compromises on quality you wouldn’t want at such a mark-up, the sleek design and sturdy quality mean you’ll likely be able to rely on the Gigabyte M27U for a long duration. It’s timeless and perfect for day-to-day use, with enough performance to switch seamlessly from work to gaming to entertainment.

Should I Buy the Gigabyte M27U?

If you want to invest in a flexible monitor as part of a wider, multi-device set-up, the connectivity potential of the Gigabyte M27U will be a major draw. Intense use of the screen might reveal its performance issues but for the average day-to-day user, you’ll be impressed by its handling of bright colours and responsiveness while gaming.

Conclusion

The Gigabyte M27U is a solid all-rounder that offers a good balance of performance, design, and connectivity options. While it may not excel in any one area, it’s a versatile option that should suit a variety of needs. If you’re looking for a reliable monitor for day-to-day use, this could be a good choice.

FAQs

Q: What is the screen resolution of the Gigabyte M27U?
A: The screen resolution is 3840 x 2160.

Q: What is the maximum refresh rate of the Gigabyte M27U?
A: The maximum refresh rate is 160Hz.

Q: What is the response time of the Gigabyte M27U?
A: The response time is 1ms.
