NVIDIA ACE Introduces Its First Multi-Modal SLM

To elevate the responses of digital humans, they must be able to ingest more context of the world, just like humans do. The NVIDIA Nemovision-4B-Instruct model is a small multi-modal model that enables digital humans to understand visual imagery in the real world and on the Windows desktop to output relevant responses.

This model uses the latest NVIDIA VILA and NVIDIA NeMo framework and recipe for distilling, pruning, and quantizing to make it small enough to be performant on a broad range of NVIDIA RTX GPUs while maintaining the accuracy that developers need. Multi-modality serves as the foundation for agentic workflows and enables digital humans that can reason and take action with little to no assistance from a user.

Solving Larger Problems Requires Large-Context Language Models

The new family of large-context SLMs are designed to handle large amounts of data inputs. This enables the model to understand harder prompts. The Mistral-NeMo-Minitron-128k-Instruct family of models has 8B, 4B, and 2B parameter versions for those looking to optimize between speed, memory usage, and accuracy on NVIDIA RTX AI PCs. These large-context models can process large sets of data in a single pass, which can reduce the need for segmentation and reassembly and provide greater accuracy.

New Updates to Audio2Face-3D NIM Microservice

When building these more intelligent digital humans, you need realistic facial animation to ensure authentic interactions that feel believable.

The NVIDIA Audio2Face 3D NIM microservice uses audio in real time to provide lip-sync and facial animation. Now, the Audio2Face-3D NIM microservice, an easy-to-use inference microservice for accelerated deployment, is available as a single downloadable optimized container. This NVIDIA NIM microservice exposes new configurations for improved customizability. It also includes the inference model used in the “James” digital human for public use.

Deploying Digital Humans for NVIDIA RTX AI PCs Made Easier

It’s challenging to orchestrate animation, intelligence, and speech AI models efficiently and optimize the pipeline for the quickest response time for PCs with the highest accuracy.

NVIDIA is announcing new SDK plugins and samples for on-device workflows available now. This collection includes NVIDIA Riva Automatic Speech Recognition for speech-to-text transcription, a retrieval augmented generation (RAG) demo and reference implementation, and an Unreal Engine 5 sample application powered by Audio2Face-3D.

These on-device plugins are built on the NVIDIA In-Game Inference SDK, available in beta today. The In-Game Inference SDK simplifies AI integration by automating model and dependency download, abstracting away the details of inference libraries and hardware, and enabling hybrid AI, where the application can easily switch between AI running on the PC and AI running in the cloud.

Conclusion

NVIDIA’s latest advancements in small language models and large-context language models are designed to help developers create more intelligent digital humans that can understand and respond to a wide range of inputs. With the introduction of the NVIDIA Audio2Face 3D NIM microservice and new SDK plugins and samples, deploying digital humans on NVIDIA RTX AI PCs has never been easier.

Adobe’s Reflection Removal Tool: A Game-Changer for Photographers

I was at Adobe Max LA in 2023 when they revealed Photoshop’s new Reflection Removal tool as a Sneak, though at the time it was called Project See Through. Provoking genuine gasps from the audience, it’s one of the most useful tools I’ve seen during one of these events, because it could actually be essential in your everyday workflow.

How it Works

The AI can tell the difference between the two parts of the photo by judging the colour and sharpness. It can then isolate and remove the unwanted elements. It won’t work on anything very badly damaged by reflection – it works in the same way as a person viewing the picture. If you can’t unscramble what you’re looking at then neither can the AI.

Removing Reflections with Ease

Just imagine how often pesky reflections get in the way of your incredible photography. (See more Adobe AI magic in the best Photoshop tutorials). The tool is designed to delight even the most basic user, making it a valuable addition to your workflow.

Google Unveils Veo 2: A State-of-the-Art Text-to-Video Generator

Improving on Real-World Physics

Google has launched Veo 2, a text-to-video generator that boasts improvements from its previous model, including a better understanding of real-world physics. This enables the AI to produce videos with more detail and realism. The videos generated by Veo 2 can reach up to 4K resolution and can tackle common video generator challenges, including hallucinations such as extra fingers.

Outperforming Competitors

When evaluated by human raters against other leading video models, including Sora Turbo, Kiling v1.5, and Meta Movie Gen, Veo 2 was voted best on overall performance and prompt adherence.

Understanding Cinematography Language

Veo 2 also understands cinematography language, such as a specific genre, lens, or angle. For example, if a user says "shallow depth of field," Veo 2 knows to blur out the subject’s background to produce the effect. This is demonstrated in the video below, which was created with a shot that specifically said, "Shot with a 35mm lens on Kodak Portra 400 film."

Availability and Accessibility

The model is available to the public and can be accessed in VideoFX in Google Labs. The early access waitlist form asks for basic information such as age, name, place of residence, relevant work, and how you heard about it. Submissions are reviewed on a rolling basis.

Improvements to Imagen 3

Google also shared that it has improved its Imagen 3 image-generation model to generate "brighter and better composed" images. The improved model can generate more diverse styles and output images with higher prompt fidelity, richer details, and textures.

Availability of Imagen 3

This version of Imagen 3 is rolling out to the public via ImageFX in Google Labs starting today, and unlike VideoFX, it does not require a waitlist. The previous version of Imagen 3 was already very capable, ranking as the best AI image generator on ZDNET’s 2024 roundup.

Google’s New AI Assistant: Gemini’s Got a Few Kinks to Work Out

The Frustrating Experience

I was driving home the other day and wanted to call my partner to let him know that I was stuck in traffic. As I’ve got a relatively old car, I rely on my phone for calls, music, and more. Usually, there’s no problem, but this time, when I said, "Hey Google, call Jim on his mobile!" my phone informed me that Gemini doesn’t do that.

The Reason Behind the Frustration

It turned out that I had recently installed Google’s new AI virtual assistant, Gemini, which had automatically shut down Google Assistant. Gemini, being brand new and not fully baked, was still missing many of the features of Google Assistant, including making phone calls and sending texts.

The Workaround: Enabling Apps Activity

However, there is a way to increase Gemini’s features. You need to add extensions, just like you would add them to Google Chrome. But, I hadn’t turned on Gemini Apps Activity, which logs and stores all your Gemini activity. Without Apps Activity turned on, extensions don’t work.

Turning on Gemini Apps Activity

To turn on Gemini Apps Activity, you can:

  • In the mobile app, tap on your personal icon in the upper-right corner and select Gemini Apps Activity.
  • On the web, go to myactivity.google.com/product/gemini.
  • Select the Turn on button, and agree to the terms of what is saved (e.g., your chats, product usage information, and location), for how long (18 months, although you can switch to three or 36 months), and for what (the usual corporate "to provide, improve, and develop Google products").

Accessing Gemini’s Extensions

Once Apps Activity is enabled, you can access Gemini’s extensions. You can ask Gemini to do something, and if there’s an extension to help, it will automatically access it. Or, you can browse the available extensions by going to gemini.google.com (via the web) or tapping your personal icon (on the mobile app).

The Available Extensions

I tried out some of the available extensions, including:

  • Google Workspace, to summarize or receive answers from Gmail, Google Calendar, Google Docs, Google Drive, Google Keep, and Google Tasks content.
  • Google MessagesPhoneUtilities, to open apps, set timers and alarms, and handle other settings.
  • Google Flights for flight info.
  • Google Hotels to search for hotels.
  • Google Maps to get "location-based information."
  • YouTube and YouTube Music to find videos and music selections.
  • And a few non-Google apps: Spotify, WhatsApp, and OpenStax.

Deleting Your Activity

If you’d rather not make all your Gemini activity permanently available, you can set an auto-delete for activity older than three, 18, or 36 months. You can also manually delete your activity logs on the same page by tapping Delete and selecting Last hour, Last day, All time, or Custom range.

Conclusion

Gemini, Google’s new AI assistant, has a lot of potential, but it’s still a work in progress. With the right extensions, it can become a powerful tool. For now, it’s worth experimenting with the available extensions and features to see what works best for you.
