Rock Paper Pencil screen protector

Get a paper feel while drawing on iPad

Rock, Paper, Pencil is a great gift for digital artists, says our editor, digital art and 3D, Ian Dean. "I’ve been using Rock, Paper, Pencil on my iPad Pro for a year and the mag-strips have finally begun to tear off, just in time to get a replacement this Black Friday. Rock, Paper, Pencil sits on top of your iPad screen and offers a subtle textured, anti-glare finish that feels just like paper. If you love digital painting on iPad, or have a friend who does, but hate the ‘slide’ of the display, this is a perfect solution."

Harnessing AI to Fill Gaps in Student Mental Health and Wellness

Why Traditional Approaches to Student Mental Health and Wellness Must be Modernized

As student mental health needs continue to grow, schools face a common challenge: how to identify students in crisis and provide support to those who need it. While hiring more mental health resources is a traditional solution, it is often not enough. Innovative districts are now turning to artificial intelligence (AI) to fill the gaps in student mental health support.

How AI Fills Gaps to Help Schools Support Student Mental Health

AI-powered student wellness monitoring can identify risk signals and alert school personnel, allowing for swift intervention. It can also monitor student wellness levels, providing an overall picture of student safety and well-being. Additionally, AI eliminates the need for manual surveys and data collection, providing real-time insights and enabling data-driven decision making.

Three Ways AI Can Help

  1. Distress Signal Detection & Alerting: AI-powered student wellness monitoring can identify risk signals, such as self-harm, bullying, or violence, and alert school personnel, enabling swift intervention.
  2. Wellness Level Monitoring: AI can assign each student a wellness level, allowing school staff to monitor student safety and well-being, and identify potential risks.
  3. Automated Data Collection & Analysis: AI can collect and analyze data in real-time, providing insights into student behavior and enabling data-driven decision making.

Ensuring AI is Used Responsibly and Ethically

K-12 administrators must ensure that AI is used in a way that is safe, responsible, and equitable. This includes ensuring data security and privacy, as well as addressing concerns about bias and equity.

Conclusion

AI-powered student wellness solutions can help schools fill critical gaps in student mental health support, providing swift and lifesaving support to students in crisis. By identifying student risks earlier, making sure students aren’t slipping through the cracks, and focusing human resources where they’re needed most, AI can help schools provide better support to their students.

FAQs

Q: How does AI-powered student wellness monitoring work?
A: AI-powered student wellness monitoring uses machine learning algorithms to analyze student data and identify risk signals, such as self-harm, bullying, or violence.

Q: Is AI-powered student wellness monitoring effective?
A: Yes, AI-powered student wellness monitoring has been shown to be effective in identifying risk signals and providing swift intervention.

Q: Is AI-powered student wellness monitoring biased?
A: AI-powered student wellness monitoring is designed to be bias-free, using algorithms that analyze patterns and relationships in data without considering demographic factors.

Q: How do I ensure AI-powered student wellness monitoring is used responsibly?
A: To ensure AI-powered student wellness monitoring is used responsibly, school administrators should evaluate the vendor’s data collection and analysis methods, as well as their policies on data security and privacy.

Scalable and Maintainable React Project Structure with Vite: A Comprehensive Guide

Why Organize Your Project?

When starting a new React project, it can be tempting to dump all your code into a single folder. However, this quickly becomes unmanageable as your application grows. A well-organized project structure allows you to:

  • Enhance maintainability: With clear separation of concerns, developers can easily find files and understand their role in the application.
  • Improve scalability: As your application grows, you can continue to add new features without overcomplicating your directory structure.
  • Support collaboration: A consistent structure makes it easier for teams to collaborate, as they can quickly locate components, styles, and logic.

Recommended React Project Structure for Large Applications

Below is a comprehensive React project structure suited for large-scale applications, using Vite for fast builds and efficient development.

Theme Styles

Location: If your app supports multiple themes (light/dark), place theme styles in the src/styles/themes/ directory.

Example:

/* theme.css (light mode) */
body {
  background-color: white;
  color: black;
}

Using SCSS

If you’re using SCSS for more advanced styling (e.g., variables, mixins), you can install SCSS and modify the structure accordingly.

Conclusion

By following a scalable and organized project structure for your React application, you ensure that your code is maintainable and easy to manage as it grows. Coupled with a clear CSS strategy using CSS Modules, global styles, and theme management, your application will be both modular and flexible.

Whether you’re building a small static site or a large enterprise application, the right project structure is key to long-term success. This organization helps improve team collaboration, simplifies debugging, and enhances performance, especially as your app becomes more complex.

A New Right to Repair for Artificial Intelligence

AI: The Growing Concern for Control and Transparency

A Growing Trend of Resistance

There’s a growing trend of people and organizations rejecting the unsolicited imposition of AI in their lives. In December 2023, The New York Times sued OpenAI and Microsoft for copyright infringement. In March 2024, three authors filed a class action in California against Nvidia for allegedly training its AI platform NeMo on their copyrighted work. Two months later, the A-list actress Scarlett Johansson sent a legal letter to OpenAI when she realized its new ChatGPT voice was “eerily similar” to hers.

The Problem is Not the Technology, but the Power Dynamic

The technology isn’t the problem here. The power dynamic is. People understand that this technology is being built on their data, often without their permission. It’s no wonder that public confidence in AI is declining. A recent study by Pew Research shows that more than half of Americans are more concerned than they are excited about AI, a sentiment echoed by a majority of people from Central and South American, African, and Middle Eastern countries in a World Risk Poll.

A New Approach: Red Teaming

In 2025, we will see people demand more control over how AI is used. How will that be achieved? One example is red teaming, a practice borrowed from the military and used in cybersecurity. In a red teaming exercise, external experts are asked to “infiltrate” or break a system. It acts as a test of where your defenses can go wrong, so you can fix them.

The Future of Red Teaming

Red teaming is used by major AI companies to find issues in their models, but isn’t yet widespread as a practice for public use. That will change in 2025. The law firm DLA Piper, for instance, now uses red teaming with lawyers to test directly whether AI systems are in compliance with legal frameworks. My nonprofit, Humane Intelligence, builds red teaming exercises with nontechnical experts, governments, and civil society organizations to test AI for discrimination and bias. In 2023, we conducted a 2,200-person red teaming exercise that was supported by the White House. In 2025, our red teaming events will draw on the lived experience of regular people to evaluate AI models for Islamophobia, and for their capacity to enable online harassment against women.

A Right to Repair

Overwhelmingly, when I host one of these exercises, the most common question I’m asked is how we can evolve from identifying problems to fixing problems ourselves. In other words, people want a right to repair.

What Does a Right to Repair Look Like?

An AI right to repair might look like this—a user could have the ability to run diagnostics on an AI, report any anomalies, and see when they are fixed by the company. Third-party groups, like ethical hackers, could create patches or fixes for problems that anyone can access. Or, you could hire an independent accredited party to evaluate an AI system and customize it for you.

Conclusion

2024 was the year the world woke up to the pervasiveness and impact of AI. 2025 is the year we demand our rights. Overturning the current, dangerous power dynamic will take some work—we’re rapidly pushed to normalize a world in which AI companies simply put new and untested AI models into real-world systems, with regular people as the collateral damage. A right to repair gives every person the ability to control how AI is used in their lives.

FAQs

Q: What is red teaming?
A: Red teaming is a practice borrowed from the military and used in cybersecurity. It involves external experts trying to “infiltrate” or break a system, testing where defenses can go wrong, and helping to fix them.

Q: How does red teaming work in the context of AI?
A: Red teaming in AI involves testing AI models for bias and discrimination, and identifying potential issues before they are deployed in real-world systems.

Q: What is the purpose of a right to repair?
A: A right to repair gives users the ability to control how AI is used in their lives, including the ability to run diagnostics, report anomalies, and see when fixes are implemented by the company.

Q: Who is behind the push for a right to repair?
A: The push for a right to repair is being led by organizations like Humane Intelligence, which builds red teaming exercises with nontechnical experts, governments, and civil society organizations to test AI for discrimination and bias.
